I am in the market for a new wallet and thought that there might be some people here with some excellent suggestions. I am not very familiar with what is good/bad/meh out there and I know there's always a few folks here who know a lot about things like this.

My first thought is to go with a leather bi-fold wallet. I have no idea who makes decent ones, great ones, crappy ones, etc...

I am rather partial to Bellroy wallets. The quality and design is top notch.

Thin, thin, thin. I hate bulky wallets and have found that carrying my wallet in my front pocket is much more comfortable. I like a money clip with space for ID and a couple of credit cards... I don't need anything else.

I'm also a fan of THIN wallets. I cannot stand sitting on a wallet and have no idea how people with wallets 1" thick retain the use of their legs.
I presently have an old Eagle Creek nylon wallet that has seen better centuries. Thin, durable and with a minimum number of doodads. That's my criteria.

I have gone to a local leather worker for years to have wallets made. I really like thin wallets and he does an amazing job. They have been cheaper than most higher end pre-made wallet brands.

For camping, fly fishing, and overseas trips I go with a cheapy nylon folding wallet.

Bellroy was already mentioned. I'll second that. I have been carrying one of the Card Sleeves for at least 3 years. Still going strong. It has a pull tab slot for seldom used cards and a stack of bills, a 3/4 slot for frequent use cards, and a third slash slot for keeping tip money handy. Small enough to disappear in your pants pocket or cycling jersey. Even a shirt pocket if you want.

Billykirk (http://www.billykirk.com/collections/wallets) makes some great slim wallets. I've been using one of the card holders for years as my every day wallet. I also have their passport holder which is pretty slick as well.

I had seen the Belroy ones and was wondering as to the quality of the leather and stitching. Some of the brands like that on Huckberry and other such sites photograph nice but upon close inspection the quality isn't great. I'm hearing that's not the case with this brand though. I'll have to another look at them!

I've been using one of these for cycling...very light and fits easily in a jersey pocket. Not sure if it would serve as a good day to day wallet.

I have a money clip. I could never go back to a rear pocket wallet, though some of these thin card carrying wallets look pretty good.

With the money clip, my main complaint is that I pay for a lot of stuff in cash, and generally use the ATM to withdraw money. So, when it is full of 20s, it is quite big (even for the front pocket), but it is perfect size with under 7 or so bills.

I've been using the card insert from a bigger wallet as my card holder/only wallet for almost 15 years now. It is at about the end of it's life, but it's SO THIN and holds everything I need. I've been looking for probably 2 years for something similar.
Rapha CC case - nope
Bellroy card case - nope, I had great hope for that.

The search continues! And yes, I'm very picky about it, has to be SUPER thin...

My wife bought me a TUMI Bi-Fold 12 years ago and I enjoyed it. FWIW I NEVER paid that much for a wallet. The corners were showing a LITTLE wear so she bought me another with the new RF shielding under the leather. I guess that's a good thing to have but the new one is a wee bit thicker and less flexible/supple than the old one without the shielding.

OK, I'm just gonna put this here because it seems to fit: Does anyone else completely HATE the number of "membership" cards you have to carry in order to get significant discounts at stores? I REALLY try to reduce all the crap I have to carry (wallet, keychain) but these stores insist I have a card at the point of sale. REI got a clue and gave me a sticker with my number on it to put on my debit card.

I buy a fair amount of stuff off of Amazon Prime but there are local shops I like to frequent as well. Some will ask for a email or phone number, that's not quite as bad as having to carry another card in the wallet. Others don't, such as Peet's Coffee. We buy their cards in bulk at Costco so I usually have a $20 coffee card in my wallet.

REI and others where it is a true membership, I make them look up my name. For most of the rest, like the grocery store, I use the same fake phone number. I make my wife carry the Costco card. I do have a library card in my wallet, but that's it.

move to italy. men rock purses all the time. and they (mostly) pull it off.

handmade leather goods are super cheap there. I had a guy in a little store make me a belt before my eye for 12 bucks. last week. I chose the leather, the buckle, etc and he just slapped it together in a couple minutes. downtown Rome.

a few years ago I bought a wallet from a guy making them in a market in the dolomites. all leather hand made by him. again, probably about 12 bucks.

100 bucks for a wallet? really?

I agree and I'm happy that many places I go allow me to push "Alternate I.D." button and enter my phone number. Lots of cards are fine with my wife because she carries her BIG wallet in her purse but they are literally a PITA for me because I sit on my wallet.

That made me remember the other major downside of money clips... You have to put it in a plastic bag (which I do anyway with my cell phone) when riding, or the bills become soaked with sweat. I've gotten a few disgusted looks when I paid for mid-ride snack with a wet bill.

also, i feel the same way about everyday carry items. i in now way pay any regard to keeping this thing safe or unscratched or anything. as i mentioned, it goes right in the jersey pocket during rides, has been in the pocket of board shorts in the ocean, etc. it's stainless steel, so really - not much to go wrong with it.

Like some above, i have to go thin. I went through a few, even tried some recommended either here or across the hall. Found this on Amazon a few months back, and because OP brought this up went back to Amazon and ordered another. No issues with the one i have, but cheap as they are i'm sure it's not built to last forever. But it does check all my boxes: thin, holds enough, plastic cards don't get too deformed etc., and it's cheap and seems to be of reasonable quality.

This............has serious potential

Interesting, though, that the text description states that it is 1/8" thick (0.125"), while the (manufacturer's) photo showing the thickness labels it as 5.5 mm thick, which is 0.2165" or more than 1.7 times as thick as 1/8".

Yes, that would make a difference to me - as many have said here, thinness is a primary feature for me.

However, that said, there are occassionally times when I want to have more capacity, necessitating more thickness. Several wallets I have purchased come with a card case in addition to the wallet, for essentially no more cost. I have found this a very effective purchase - find a set I like and get both at once. It is the card case that I carry 90% of the time, with the full wallet available when I need it, and also serving as storage for the cards I don't carry with me every day.

Here is one example, shown with the wallet it accompanied. The empty card case measures 3"x4"x4.8mm (using a caliper for that last measurement). MSRP was around $100, got the pair on sale for ~$40, and it is holding up and wearing very well.

$85 for a wallet?! I knew there were some rich folks on here but that's crrrrazy rich!! :p

This clip has worked for me for past 15 years. I still remember when my wife teased me about it on our first date and through the years she's tried buying me nice(r) wallets but I keep coming back to what works.....and this works.

On the weekends I put the $5 bills on the outside :D

I've dome this
Edit: I've also done it.

I was in a mtg the other day and this guy had a iPhone case with a couple of built in sleeves/pockets on the back side for cash and plastic. Maybe it's time to lose the wallet completely since we're always carrying phones??

These folks (a couple) make very nice leather goods. The quality is excellent.

I did this for a long time. I really liked it other than the the vague-but-ever-present feeling that if I lost it, my life would somehow be at the mercy of some Russian hacker cartel.

This-

"Stop and think about that wonderful dark pocket of leather in the middle of a baseball glove.
This wallet is made out of that leather: baseball-glove leather. Centercut. Beautifully made to last and darken, and be with you for a long time.
Baseball Glove Leather Wallet (No. 1004). Regular billfold size, six credit card pockets, two inside pockets, full-length compartment for bills, lined throughout. Handsome, simple, hard to argue with."

Been using these for decades..

No kidding! Very true.
(Russian hacker cartel or John McAfee...)

This happened to me just yesterday:
1) Ready to go to LBS, grab iPhone from cradle, then keys/wallet from front door tray.
2) 3/4 way through drive think, "Where's my phone?" Check front seat, pockets...nothing.
3) Start to panic...did I leave it on the car roof? Is it smashed, stolen, gone in any case?
4) Park at LBS, check car interior, roof: nothing. ....cr@p!
5) Drive home from LBS, still in a panic...then...whew...I had put down the phone, picked up keys/wallet, forgot phone.
6) Lesson learned: don't consolidate everything, because if my phone/insurance/plastic/cash/etc. had been on my car roof in a nice, tidy package, and had fallen off, gone...well, I wouldn't be posting here right now, that is certain.

I like my phone, I like my wallet, I like my cash, but I think it better to keep them separate.

Good fences = good neighbors, and all that stuff.

Dowload Keyring and store all your loyalty info in there. Also several of the mobile wallets have a loyalty card feature which will automatically present your card with payment.

Lastly the vast majority of pos systems can search for your account. So carrying plastic is pretty much unnecessary anymore.

I'm finding I'm using this more and more. Will be quite happy when I don't need to carry the other stuff around. In fact, I've stopped carrying a couple cards that are loaded in my Apple Wallet as I almost never use them and don't need the bulk.

I wish there was an alternative to Apple Pay. It seems that when i loaded Apple Pay on my phone it wiped out the cards my wife stored on her phone- same apple account.

Looks like there are a lot of minimalists here. I really like these magnetic money clip wallets that hold 4 cards. I'll carry my drivers license, medical card and 2 credit card plus 5 or 6 bills and it stays very slim.

Again - why I like the Apple Wallet app. I keep my CVS, Walgreens, REI, and many other membership cards there. Even if they can't scan it, at least I have the number.

Android..and my bank doesnt support it.

My wife gave me one of these seven or eight years ago. I have used a money clip for thirty years or so, so this was a definite step up.

Expensive, but lasts forever: http://bosca.com

I like their tri-folds. They have lasted about 5 years for me.

I like the Coach tri-fold wallets although less elegant than the Bosca wallets. Tough as nails in saddle leather. Mine is over ten years old and looks great. Large enough to hold overseas currency that tend to be larger than USD bills.

I often wear tactical pants and keep my wallet in thigh pocket, so, thickness is not an issue.

When riding, I just just a heavy duty ziplock baggie. Keeps the money dry from sweat or rain.

Apple is not going to let another mobile payment app on their phone. We tried to develop an ios version or our app when I was at Softcard but could never get it working properly.

There are plenty of options on android. Android Pay and Samsung Pay are the leaders.

I don't know about the rest of y'all, but mine is usually empty...

On the outside of my pay stubs it says "Deposit Advice", on the inside it always says "You need to make more money".

Just bought one of these: Alpine (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01B3UAH7Q?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00)

Kind of a paradigm shift for me as I always used to carry a bifold. I pretty much never carry cash so this should suffice.

I picked up a Tumi wallet on sale about 7 years ago and have been using it ever since. It still looks great and has lasted considerably longer than any other wallet I've ever had.

I've had it for about a month now and I have nothing but good things to say.

As for the Key Ring app: Costco will NOT honor that bar code. I got into a bit of a tiff with them over this. Damn Luddites.

Just received yesterday. Cash always is in pocket, but it seems the older I become, the more plastic cards enter my wallet. it's getting a bit ridiculous. I try and use apps on my phone to limit carrying them, but between points cards, bank card, visa, health card, gift cards, etc etc.. my solution was:

https://cardstack.co/

So far, well worth the $16 CAD I payed for it.

Currently holding 20 plastic cards.

That's what I do. I use an iPhone case with a slot for cards (http://www.amazon.com/iPhone-Plus-Wallet-Case-Protective/dp/B00NICZXYU/ref=sr_1_4?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1461172279&sr=1-4&keywords=iphone+case+wallet). It's not elegant but it works well - I carry a bank card, credit card and driver's license. It provides good protection from occasional drops, but it's not a super protection.

It's not elegant as leather ones but it won't stretch like leather where the cards would fall out easily. Moreover, the price is right too at $15 and it simplifies my life.

Bought a Saddleback based on a recommendation here 4-5 years ago or more.
Front-Pocket ID Wallet (http://www.saddlebackleather.com/front-pocket-id-wallet)
Have carried it in my front pocket every day since and couldn't be more happy with it.
My wife hates how tight the cash-compartment is, but it suits me just fine...and limited space is usually not a problem for the limited amount of cash I typically have on me.
