This makes me sad.

I heard him give a public lecture once--a tour de force--witty, erudite and thought-provoking.

Heaven for him ought to be a great library, with good companions for afternoon tea.

My fondest memory of any college course I took was reading The Name of the Rose and discussing and writing about it in a class with an excellent professor.
