Get her some flowers, take her out to a nice dinner, and surprise her with something sparkly... and then break the news about the new bike

Depends on your space and the size of your current collection. After a certain point, +1 gets to be a really hard sell, particularly if you have to find extra room for it. Then you have to subtract one in order to add one.

"technically" I will be dis-assembling one to build the new to me frame so maybe I will be OK

Um, in case you hadn't noticed, Paceline is chock full of enablers when it comes to picking up bike swag. Coming here seeking help in refraining from buying a cool new (to you) bike/frame is like going into a nightclub seeking help in refraining from drinking.

I recently heard my wife say "It helps that you're making them yourself."

I do have a couple to offload, though, and another one to add to that list soon.

Try a different genre - easier to justify :) My steel was delivered 2 days ago - a Niner RLT 9 Steel IMBA Edition. Test ride today. I certainly didn't need it as I had recently purchased a Ridley X-Trail. And actually was sort of expecting, even hoping, to lose the eBay auction. Alas, I won. But I think it's going to be a very cool bike and it comes with a set of Blackburn bags.

I also ride a Fargo regularly, actually my go to gravel/trail/whatevering bike. My old Giant TCR is getting long in the tooth and I "want" to build a nice climbing bike with an old Racing Triple I have laying around. The Compact gearing is OK but the Triple with a 28 gets me plenty of leg speed on the long climbs I sometimes see.

The more I buy the less I ride. Just a thing I've noticed about myself over the years. YMMV.

Such a funny thing this obsession we all seem to have with 'needing' another bike! I tend to have bikes from different eras or different uses to help me justify having more than I need. I recently put up for sale a Colnago Master that I labored for a couple years to build. Built it, rode it 190 miles, and haven't touched it since last June. For me, as long as I ride them, then the 'need' is real and I can justify keeping them. Once I realize I'm not going to ride one, I sell it. I think I've settled on three at the moment. C59, C40, and a Hampsten Strada Bianca as a go anywhere/do anything bike. Though I did just buy a Cinelli SC from the forum for my Eroica ride in a couple months but I plan to disassemble and sell it afterwards. Anyhow, as others have already pointed out, this is absolutely the wrong place to go for help to not buy another! So, take the plunge and make sure you ride it!

I know the feeling! I currently have: Colnago EPS, Serotta Meivici, Moots Compact, and for the trails a Moots Rigormootis. I currently have no desire to get a new ride and really, no reason whatsoever to do so. I have a great stable of bikes and love them all, but I completely understand the want/need for another!! I really do think I am done barring some crazy circumstances where I wreck a couple of them.

Old Spud has it about right.

I ask myself whenever I get this feeling; Is it better than what I already have?

Owning 12 bikes or so, a lot of them custom, I can honestly tell myself no. Please keep in mind, this does not always work, as I have said this since I had 8 bikes, and I still look all the time!

I think the OP is asking a disguised question.

The pressing question he's really asking is "how do I get my SO to agree to this?"

Surely we can help him out since we've all been there, I'm convinced there are dozens and dozens of true experts here. :D

And if it makes you feel better, my burning desire for a new bike just led me to drop way too much on a lusty Weigle. I'm going to get a talking to when it shows up, but she knows that bike has always been on my list. Its just i finally found it. I'd happily sell something off to keep the Weigle though. of this i am sure and i have not even seen it in person yet
