I was driving to work today and was driving behind a jeep with the license DEEP LM. Reminded me of the Jerry Garcia song. I know we should be talking about bikestuff, but spring is still awaysaway.

Deep Elem Blues is a great song and was a staple at Dead shows, but it isn't a Jerry tune. It was a "traditional" blues/folk song covered by a number of different artists. Jerry wrote a lot of great music. He also was encyclopedic in his knowledge and appreciation of what now is called "Americana." I missing going to Dead shows and just cannot get excited about the current incarnation with John Mayer.

Same here.

I liked the Levon Helm verson the best.

I like Levon's version too. The Dead's Reckoning album (I'm old) is still one of my favorite live Dead recordings of all time and is in constant rotation on my iPod. An expanded 2-Disc reissue was released a few years back and it is really good.

Tickets for the Dead & Co in Saratoga just went on sale, and I'm debating if I want to pay the $$$ for tickets.

You should go.
Mayer absolutely kills it. Do you realize how great a guitarist that guy is?
Go listen to him go head to head with Clapton sometime
Monday SF show was way better than Fare Thee Well #1

It's big bucks now, and with all the ticket brokers scooping the seats, all that's left is lawn. I'll wait until the concert gets closer and find seats when the brokers get stuck. I'm not interested in sitting on the lawn if it is wet out.

I get that. I wouldn't sit either. Wait. Pay the money. It will be worth it.

The last time I was in the SF civic auditorium to see the GD it was 1984 NYE

To see them (mostly) again in that iconic 7,000 capacity venue of so many NYE runs was absolutely fantastic.

The guy next to me smoked two and that with the heavy cloud forced him to leave early. Old age no doubt.

I see a lot of live music, and one thing I've noticed is that no one openly smokes or tokes up any more. It seems that those partaking are more discreetly using vaporizers. It's actually much nicer without all of the smoke.

Mayer is a great guitarist, but his strength is as a pretty heavy blues player in the SRV mode, which IMHO isn't really a great match for the type of free jamming the Dead did/do. The stuff I've heard of him with Weir haven't done as much for me as either playing on their own home turf. I thought the last guy they had in the Jerry seat in the Dead or Further or whatever they were calling it, the guy from DSO, was really damn good. And I thought Trey pretty much killed it and even really took the wheel in those summer "Grateful Dead" shows they did - I streamed those and really dug one of the Santa Clara shows and two from Chicago, wished I'd been there even.

But the problem with trying to fill the Jerry seat is you can't. He was a one-off, no matter how much someone manages to sound like him. A lot of people got the Hendrix sound down real well too, but nobody came within 100 miles of the real thing. And I've never loved Weir in any context other than bridging those weird harmonic gaps between Jerry and Phil - which he did brilliantly and at a near genius level at times. But I've just never bought him as a leader - Phil and Jerry were each capable of driving the plane, but Bobby was the ultimate wingman, not a pilot. He had one amazing strength but his context doesn't exist anymore with Jerry long gone and Phil off the road.

But yeah, Deep Elum was a great old blues that Jerry had a really nice feel for! Saw them play it eclectically a couple of time but I always liked their recorded acoustic versions better...

I thought that Furthur was a little creepy, in that John Kadlechik sounded and looked a little too much like Jerry.

In the Levon Helm YouTube of Deep Elem posted above, Larry Campbell sang and played guitar. He played with Phil & Friends last time they were out, he also was in Levon's house band, and was in Dylan's band for a long time. I could see him sitting in with the Dead.

In Mayer's defense, he is far better with the Dead than Trey Anastasio was for the Fare thee Well Shows.

I have the 2-cd version also and it is really good. I especially like the takes on Cassidy.

This^
No one can be jerry. Mayer was completely satisfying whereas to me trey was not. Bob sang more inspired with Mayer.

Go see the show.

I thought these guys were supposed to be done. I guess Bobby (now Papa Smurf) wants to use Mayer to get in on some young hot groupie action? Maybe Mayer is good as a musician, but it just looks weird/pathetic.

I agree that the Grateful Dead guys are old. But they were good in their day. Who do you think is good these days?

We had a thread on this a few months back that was long.

I'm a recovering deadhead and an listening to a lot of Americana, alt-county, and alt-folk. My latest favorites are:

Luther Dickenson (his band is the North Mississippi Allstars)
http://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2016/02/luther-dickinson-live-at-paste-studio.html

Jason Isbell
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Flg9zvNj27Y

the Drive-by Truckers
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=d6uGdB8L6PU
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=mIQdsR05YEM

Gillian Welch and David Rawlings (or Dave Rawlings Machine)

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=JtaCgLobvrk
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=5H3zlee_VRo
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=jYeq6XoOg8s

Dave and Phil Alvin (long-time Blasters fan here)
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=JtaCgLobvrk

As far as new music by known artists, Los Lobos ,
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=pqVvVwLO0yo

and Lucinda Williams
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=cckroKLPsqg

both have new releases that are great.

The best jam bands out there IMO are Tesdeschi-Trucks and Widespread Panic.

And the old standby, NRBQ in the old incarnation with Big Al Anderson and Joey Stampinato, or Terry's new incarnation.

I listen to just about all of those bands but was not familiar with Jason Isbell and Dave and Phil. Thanks for the links!

Jason Isbell just won a Grammy and has won a number Americana Music awards over the past couple years. He wrote some of the better known Drive-By Truckers tunes when he was with that band, including Outfit (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=hLXADgF4tyI) and Decoration Day (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Kwyh3zQ6vPg). He is one of the better singer-songwriters out there. His song Dress Blues (another song he wrote with DBT) (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=euVyT0Qbl0k) was just covered by Zac Brown, and Dress Blues and his song Elephant are two of the saddest songs ever. (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=LHJhyrrUTgc). I've been a fan for years, and it's nice to see his talent being recognized. He is getting really big. I hesitate to say, he's of the same caliber as Dylan.

A CBS story on him: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=QqasKIuE3y8

It was all good. I really liked the Jason Isbell stuff and David Rawlings doing Led Zeppelin. Thanks.
