I was searching old threads, looking for ideas for chamois creme. Decided what I was going to try, then I came across a few posts from people who mixed their own. Interesting.
Questions for those who do: Is it worth the trouble? Does whatever you use last as long as the commercial stuff? Or perhaps longer? What's your recipe?
I'm game to try it, if you're getting similar results to what you were using before. (I tried homebrew lube & it was not nearly as good)
For reference, I use the Doc's & Assos cremes, atm.

Different people have different needs. Some want an astringent because they perspire into their chamois so much. Some want an antiseptic because they get hair follicle infections. Some get chafing and want something that's slippery. And so on. You may find something you like, but if you don't feel it does the job completely, you can customize it or make it up yourself. Plus, what you need in the summer may be very different from what you need in the winter.

In the summer I like slippery, for example. I tend to chafe. So I found that DZNuts was OK but when I doctored it with a little Bodyslide, it worked just right. In the winter, I like a thicker treatment that I can put on heavier, since I'm spinning in lower gears and seated more, with more layers of lower extremity clothing. I was simply using Noxema for a while, but it tended to fade on longer rides. So mixing Noxema with Chamois Butt'r gave me something that worked just right.

There are also the cases where I have something wrong. For some reason a couple years ago, I had a spot that suddenly started coming up with infected hair follicles. I treated the spot religiously with soap and astringent and then antibiotics, but for riding, I used Noxema mixed with a multipurpose antibiotic. Worked well.

So ... lots of reasons to make something for your own personal use. I wouldn't get crazy about it. That's what mixing special formulations of Mastik One is for. But you can definitely get something that works better for you if you formulate it yourself. I learned all this on the six-day tracks, where the heat and speed gives everyone saddle problems and every soigneur worth his salt knew how to make up an improved chamois cream for the rider he supported.

I've used noxema in a pinch. Seems like it's the same thing.

I used coconut oil last summer, when I used anything

Naturally antiseptic, thin, smells good, washes out clean, relatively cheap, a jar will last a million years..

But now I have a tube of butt'r cream... is just easier than sticking my hand down in a jar

Jar of petroleum jelly
1 oz triple antibiotic cream
1 oz cortisone cream
1 oz lanolin wax

Mix up and smear

Been using this for 15-20 years.

I'm guessing this lasts a fair amount of time in the saddle? How big a jar are you using?

I've had good success with Bag Balm as a less expensive alternative than the cycling-branded stuff.

Just spray rubbing alcohol in your junk before going to ride and you will be good to go :D

No joke. Cheap and reliable.

I ride with a retired guy that rode 125 centuries last year alone. He uses some kind of diaper cream from Walmart. For the price, not sure it's worthwhile to make your own?

I think this is the stuff- http://www.walmart.com/ip/Equate-Creamy-Diaper-Rash-Relief-Zinc-Oxide-Ointment-4-oz/26862269

^^^^^^ That's about $0.62 / oz

vvvvvvvvv This is $0.29 / oz and works great (for me) for rides of 2 hr or less. They also have a cycling-specific version that adds shea butter.

I tried this, and like you said, it was ok for less than two hours. Maybe I should try it again for shorter stuff & stretch out the "good" stuff for longer rides.

That's exactly what I do. US for shorter rides, and the "real" stuff for epic rides.

Since the majority of my rides (and miles) are less than 2 hrs it saves me from feeling that I'm wasting money on Assos (or whatever).

how about Vaseline?

Base of mashed durian
1tsp Amsoil
1tsp drained essence of Gelfling
1 tbsp genuine empathetic tears from a Republican (very very rare)
2 tbsp butthurt tears of a hipster (easy to get)
1 tsp sulfur water
1 scream of an offended feminist (even easier)
2 Mea culpas from a liberal (also rare)
3 tbsp stans sealant with a blast of CO2 to curdle it just a bit
a 1” square of Ital chocolate melted
a pinch of good ole Purple Kush kief
3 grams of pink oil paint
mixed at 4,000 rpms to the sound of Kashmir

Keeps me riding all day long.

When I don’t have that available I like Assos and recently Morgan Blue (soft cream) a little thin but seems to get the job done admirably. Coconut oil sounds interesting, also good for oil pulling (can you go 15min?)

how about Vaseline?

I used to use that on natural chamois to keep them from becoming hard as a board. No need to go that route for today's versions. It does last a long time on the bike, but is harder to wash out.

Essence of Gelfling is only good if you drink it!

I've only used chamois creme once after a long ride on a new saddle rubbed me the wrong way. Otherwise, I've never needed it. Am I just lucky?

Skeksis Cycling Team secrets really shouldn't be bandied about on a public board. Hmmmmmmmmmmm?
