In the text description lower down in the listing the seller describes the chainring as "MD Type". What is MD Type?

It corresponds to the chainring "group". "For best shifting performance" you would match MA, MB, MC and MD together- kind of like running a 53/39 or 52/36 or 50/34. That would be a MA, MB, MC, MD matching.

When they properly match, there's a tooth on a chainring aligned so it's sitting there ready to grab the chain when you shift off the other ring. Ramps and pins are all positioned likewise. When you mix and match rings, you get some slippery shifts. This means that if you knew how to shift before pins and ramps, you'll have no problem. If you grew up with shifting dependent on pins and ramps, you'll miss some shifts until you learn to be a little more aggressive in your shifting.

Thanks. So i have a triple crankset running 28/ 38/48. Are the M designations marked on the rings? i've never noticed them.

So you're saying that all three rings should have the same designation, either all MA, or all MB, et.c.?
