I'm seaching for a Shimano 9speed compatible 13-27 cassette. There is no such animal. Shimano does offer 12-27 and 13-25 combinations. Can I swap the largest three cogs on these cassettes? It seems that results would yield a 13-27. The other cassette should be identical to a standard Shimano 9sp 12-25 cassette.

Use ultegra cogs..even the 8 spd are fine...just use 9spd spacers. Have fun.
Older Ultegra cogs are fixed together via a small threaded rod thru the back of the cluster...just remove it.

Hypnos - yes you can do that. Another option is to buy a single 12-27 cassette, and then buy the 16 and the 13/spacer as loose sprockets for about $30 from Harris Cyclery or anybody else that will sell them.

I believe Sheldon Brown has claimed that it is relatively straightforward to drill out the rivets holding the cog groups together. Doing so would allow substitution of your cog(s) of choice.

Sheldon Brown has a good article about customizing cassettes on the Harris website. I made my own 13-30 using a couple of cogs I bought from his site, and it was easy to do and works great.

You might also try Cycle Dynamics (http://www.cycle-dynamics.com/) in British Columbia. They machine custom 6/4 ti cogs, ramped and beveled for smooth shifting. They come loose with spacers and you can order just about any combination imaginable. Makes it easy to quickly assemble the right ratio cassette for any particular ride. Quality and flexibility but at a price.

I know this is not as interesting as the latest on Floyd Landis, but here is follow up to my custom cassette project. I wanted a 27 cog for the biggest hills, and will almost never use a 12 cog. My proposed solution was to switch the large three-cog clusters from 13-25 and 12-27 cassettes. This does not work and here is why.

13 - 14 - 15 - 16/17 - 19/21/23 - 25

12 - 13 - 14 - 15 - 17/19 - 21/24/27

What bummer! :crap:

What's up with the loose 25T cog in the 13-25 cassette?

Can't you you use the 12-25, remove the outer 12 and 13 and replace with a 1st position 13, and add a 27 behind the 25? That's the same principle Sheldon uses to make his 13-30 Century Special out of the 12-27.

Good idea but would not be quite the same. I'll probably sell the 13-25 cassette and try BarryG's suggestion from an earlier reply.

Thanks, Jeff
