A few years ago, Cancellara did a fashion photo shoot, where he carried a bike on his shoulder. Now this (first seen at cyclocosm)

Contractual Obligation is my bet. But he might think he looks good in that outfit?

That's definitely the lamest thing I've seen all day, and I've been awake for a solid 4.5 hours.

Contractual obligation would be my bet, too

When did Nike start making a 3-hole casual shoe?

You might change your mind if you have ever seen the photo shoots from Rochelle Gilmore, Liz Hatch or Daisy Depoorter!

professional cyclists as models is probably appropriate because they are also skinny weirdos.

There's a certain vanity involved with a lot of cycling. A lot of folks obsess over coordinating the color of their finishing tape/bottle cage bolts/water bottles. Doesn't surprise me that someone might want to do a photo shoot if it's incentivised by money/exposure/prestige.

You can't imagine the amount of crazy shat that gets kicked around in budget meetings. If you think that cover is bad just think of the cover ideas that didn't get shot.

Why? Because Froomie has bills too.

It's an editorial shoot so Froome and Sky didn't get a dime. As someone who shoots pro athletes from time to time I can honestly say there's times when I'm stunned that an athlete will actually participate in a shoot like this let alone even talk to a photographer. Judging from the images, I'd say Froome turned up at a Studio in London with his bike and was in and out within 2 hours.

Savvy pro athletes realize that they only have a short window in which to make money based on their talents - the average pro athletic career in the US is only five years - and so they need to diversify their income streams by maximizing opportunities while they can. Nobody wants to wind up working in a Schaarbeek mattress factory.

Right, just talk to any good-looking female tennis player. They make more off endorsements than tennis, probably by a long shot. Maria Sharapova is a fashion empire.

they do it for the same reason that actors do talk shows (no money there either) - publicity.

i doubt that he turned up with his bike. someone from the magazine arranged for it to be messengered there.

My guess is that he lost a bet.
