Gonna send my SRM back to get re-batteried/recalibrated, but beforehand want to clean up/debadge and repaint the crank arms a single color...or down to the carbon and clear coat (Run Campy/have SRAM SRM). I've searched for similar threads and don't see a lot of clear/good advice.

HELP?

If it was my crank ( which I now have an FSA slk light) that I'm thinking about taking off the paint. I would start with 600 grit paper, until you get down to the paint. then wet 800, followed by wet 1200. wipe away with clean cloth and use windex.

once the crank is dried up, mask off or tape away the parts you don't want.

use this.

it's nice and simple in a can. spray an even coat, let dry for an hour, respray.

then use the 800 or 1200 wet and repeat with windex for about 6 coats.

one last 1200 scrub and use scratch remover by NuFinish or mothers, simoniz etc.

if you want to wait for pics, I'll be doing mine at some point when I don't ride for a few days.

to remove the clear from carbon, buy your self a box of straight razors. then use that to scrape off the clear coat. replace razor blade every handful of minutes or so, you'll know when you need a fresh blade.

hold razor not quite perpendicular to the surface, and just move it back & forth, like you're scraping something off--which, technically, you are. don't need to put a lot of pressure on it. start out VERY light, and then go from there.

after done, a little bit of 600 grit will smooth things out.

don't go crazy with pressure and you'll be fine. you'll know if you hit the carbon cosmetic layers.

it's a bit unnerving at first, but you'll get a feel for what to do in about 30 seconds once you see how much pressure it takes to remove the clear.

here's what it looks like when beginning...

after a first few light scrapes...

and then a few more scrapes...
