A few questions on a Campagnolo Chorus Ultra Narrow 10 speed Chain failire
on the Chorus chain ( with under 1000 miles) on my seven had one of its pin shear off between the outer plate and rollors
Questions are
1. Is this common
2. Replace with
a. Campagnolo record http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-2016-Campagnolo-Record-10s-Ultra-Narrow-10-speed-Chain-and-Link-CN6-REX-/301866805419?hash=item4648a9e8ab:g:xHQAAOSwX~dWjrv Y
b. replace with KMC X10.93 10-Speed Stretch-Proof Bike Chain 116L fits Campagnolo SRAM Shimano
http://www.ebay.com/itm/KMC-X10-93-10-Speed-Stretch-Proof-Bike-Chain-116L-fits-Campagnolo-SRAM-Shimano-/221786912241?hash=item33a387b5f1:g:FfIAAOSweuxWQ5h 8
c. SRAM PC-1091 HOLLOW PIN 1/2" X 11/128TH 10 SPEED BICYCLE CHAIN W/ POWER LOCK
http://www.ebay.com/itm/SRAM-PC-1091-HOLLOW-PIN-1-2-X-11-128TH-10-SPEED-BICYCLE-CHAIN-W-POWER-LOCK-/331772354203?hash=item4d3f2c5e9b:g:mcUAAOSwPc9Wtt1 ~
3 I assume my chain is not repairable
4. Do I need a special tool like the Campagnolo chain tool for their chains
http://www.ebay.com/itm/CAMPAGNOLO-10-SPEED-CHAIN-BREAKER-TOOL-UT-CN200-/371538607951?hash=item56816d3f4f:g:5nEAAOSwX~dWonP a

Thanks
Charles
PS Managed to shorten chain and fix it too ride home YES

I would say it's quite uncommon. I've never heard of it before.

If it was joined without using a campy chain tool and proper pin, that was probably the cause of the failure. The pins are peaned so you can't just push one out and then back in.

You can happily use a kmc chain. I personally like the combination of a campy chain with a kmc c10 master link.

so in repairing mine on the road it is toast

do you use a special tool for kmc chains

KMC chains join with a master link (a pretty decent one). You cut the chain to the right length with the chain tool, and then join it with the master link (much like Sram chains). I usually keep a spare master link or two in my bag, in case a friend breaks their chains (I've never broken a chain).

Did the failure happen at THE pin, the one you pushed in during install? If yes, I'd guess improper installation.

I have well over 50,000 miles on Campy 10 chains and I've never experienced that. Mostly Veloce, and a few Record chains. Get a Veloce and install it properly.

I have been using sram or shimano 10 speed chains, the shimano with sram or connex links.

Both have been great

Never used the campagnolo pin, campagnolo chain with a kmc master link is the way to go.

If the master link is not in the right position you can risk failure.

Charles, You cannot join a 10s Campy chain like you would a vintage chain. The pins don't work like that, unless you use the supplied unused pin. Use a KMC quicklink.

I had a similar failure when I re-used a pin in a Shimano chain. Taught me to never do that. Took out the rear der, hanger and the der ended up in the, fortunately extremely sturdy spokes. Had to Flintstone my way back to the car.

I use master links on everything now. Why mess with special pins and specific tools.

NEVER use the special pins that Shimano and Campy want you to use. Throw those away and buy a link like the KMC, SRAM etc. snap together links. I like the SRAM, since it will NOT come apart on it's own and has to be broken to take off.
The Campy tool is hundreds of dollars and if you weren't going to use it daily, it would never pay for itself. That doesn't even make a lot of sense for even most shops.

Was it installed using the supplied pin? Did it fail at this pin? Or was the failed pin a pin that was partially pushed out then pushed back in?

Very uncommon. I have installed a lot of 10s Campag chains and haven't had any fail.

The Campy tool is hundreds of dollars and if you weren't going to use it daily, it would never pay for itself. That doesn't even make a lot of sense for even most shops.

This is silly. If installed properly, neither are prone to failure. For Campagnolo 10s, the 'special tool costing hundreds of dollars' is not necessary, just push the pin in straight. Into a 'virgin' plate'.

The best tool for Campagnolo 11s is the Campag 11s chain tool but there are 3-4 chain tools out there now that install then peen the 11s pin. BUT even a brand new Campagnolo 11s chaintool isn't 'hundreds of dollars'.

'Most shops' think Campagnolo is a weird science or black art anyway, they wouldn't know Campagnolo if it hit them in the face, even tho 'Campagnolo' is just cables and gears ike the other 2.

I like KMC, IRD, Wipperman quick links for all the chain speeds. After installing my Campag chains with the proper in, when I remove for cleaning, I reinstall with a quick link..using and selling many, of the ones mentioned right above.

didn't set the properly on mine. Enjoyed a lovely 20k walk back home.

SRAM makes an 11speed ( or 10 speed) powerlink. I've used one on my campy chain for 500 kms. works just fine.

do you use a special tool for kmc chains

I use a piece of wire--inserted between the two plates of the adjacent links as shown, then cross the ends and give a pull to force the pins toward each other and pop the link open. Like this:

Chain came installed from an East coast Bike shop
and it happened about 10 links away from Master link
You could see pin had sheared off just outside roller link
50,000 miles on Campy chains wow
I had maybe at maximum 1000 miles on the chain components all Chorus

Yes I decided rest of chain was toast If one failed wouldn't others fail so repair was just to get home
I toast the chain in a metal recycle bin at Rivendell
I guess if I had a master link with me I could have installed that and chain would be good has new

I tried removing chain and riding bicycle and pushing with one foot sort of worked. Than I fixed the chain. but fix is only temporary I need a new chain

If you can use this KMC campy 10sp link PM me your address and I will send it to you. I used it maybe 100 miles on a R10 chain before just replacing the chain due to misjudging the length

Dont think a tourniquet using a wire is that frustrating, pretty straight forward :D

Now that I think it, you can even use a used zip tie for the job, pull it, and the open it. Need to test this :D Good way to save 15 bucks :D

Ditto. kmc master links are great. They're on all of my bikes, campy or not.
