Dan Hicks (of Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks) died last night. Introduced a heavy swing groove into San Francisco-based folk and jazz. 'Striking it Rich', 'Where's the Money' and others were some of my favorite and most-listened to music in the late '60's through early '70's.

RIP Dan. You done good.

Edit: Adding a link to a YouTube showing the typical light-hearted swing with a sense of humor: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZAKPVaWyZ4

Met Dan in 1965, when I was 19 and he was a featured performer at a folksinging camp I attended. A year later he showed up as a member of the Charlatans, the first SF hippie band, performing the songs he had written as a folk artist.

Later I worked as a roadie for another SF band, and we traveled in the same circles. Much later I was a piano mover, moved Dan's pianos several times. Great guy, once he stopped drinking (famously) in the '70s. Had an amazing guitar collection.

Oh man, this has been a tough couple of months.

Dan Hicks and Asleep at the Wheel were the two acts that turned me on to that particular type of Western Swing. When I was growing up in Arizona, there was a lot of swing dancing to this kind of music - I never got into the dancing but dug the music immensely. I can't say I ever took it too much farther than Dan Hicks and AATW, but I sure got a lot of enjoyment out of both of them.

Thanks for that. If you like, here's what I think is a fantastic live version from the 1989 Reunion on Austin City Limits: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f95Y1YSs6eo

Oh what a loss. I've been listening to Dan since I first saw him in an outdoor concert in Seattle in 69 (might have been more like 71). He has been a mainstay on my playlist ever since. I've also introduced him to many others that had never heard of him. "Milk Shakin Mama", "Moody Richard", the list is long. Loved the songs with the Licketttes too. Ditto to Ray and the remarks about Asleep At The Wheel, I've been a faithful listener of them since 72. I believe either one or both Maryann Price and Naomi Eisenberg (The Lickettes) have appeared with AATW too.
RIP Dan.
