saddle care

I have an old Selle Italia Flite, that is probably 8 years old. I have started to ride it more lately, as it is on my trainer bike, and am really liking it. It is real firm, but feels real comfortable. My question is what kind of maintenance is recommeded for seats. The black leather is real scuffed on the nose and sides, and is real light gray in color and real slick. Is this a problem in its longetivity? Do people use leather conditioners or anything like that on a saddle like this?
