Campagnolo threaded headset reinstallation issue

I can't seem to get this thing reinstalled correctly because of the stupid nylon seal. Including pictures because maybe I'm being thick. Should've take more than mental pictures when I tore it down months ago. Every time I start to tighten the nut, it just seems not normal.

Also, anyone ID this headset? I thought it was Croce d'Aune because of the frame it was on, but it's not since more than four wrench flats.
It takes 20 3/16 bearings per retainer.

give us a pic of the top cup, i think that one in the lower belongs on top.

also ditch the cage. pack the cup with bearings and pull one out.

Switched cages
It's something to do with this nylon washer. Just adds resistance. If I don't use it you can see the bearings. Ugh

Some of those Campy headsets have slighter larger bearing on bottom. It's hard to tell sometimes unless you look close.

Also....the way they go in the cups might look upside down until you study them a little. I believe you might have them upside down. Check the one on fork crown. it looks upside down to me. Hard to tell from pic.
Definitely....if they worked before, they will work now.

I think I got it. Still not super low resistance, but we will see with the first test ride. The nylon washer was tricky to get situated. I had to mostly tighten, then loosen a touch and pop out a section that got "sucked in" to the bearing area.
I really don't think I have them upside down, I flipped and they felt worse. I'll ditch the retainers if I have to. Also, I should've mentioned that it felt really dirty before (previous owner), so I can't compare it.


Anyone know what headset this is? I can't find it on Velobase, but I'm probably overlooking it.

I know this is Dura Ace, but the cups and cones are the same more or less and this is how I have things oriented.

Yes....Like that. The way I discovered different sized top and bottom was when a Chorus headset came coming loose. Couldn't figure out why....then discovered different bearing sizes. But yours looks too old to have different sizes. See how it goes.....otherwise just go loose balls. More bearing surface that way anyhow. Looks good!

So I did a test ride yesterday and the headset seems OK. I can't remember if I tried the "no hands" test that has worked for me in the past, but I'll do that today on my get-the-soreness-out ride.

I think the seal creates less drag when you're actually sitting on the bike.
I'll post a picture of the project today. It's getting bar wrap and fine tuning things. Been a long time coming.
