A few years ago I came across this bike on ebay. The photos were dark and grainy and it was obvious from the description the seller knew nothing about bicycles, except that this one had some value. (Turns out the bike was part of an estate sale.) Many of the parts on the bike were worn out and/or not from the original C-Record group it was likely built with. But, most importantly the frame appeared to be in good condition. I placed a conservative bid on it and ended up the only bidder and won the auction.

My hunch about the frame was true the owner had taken good care of it but the bike had seen better days. The wheels had been replaced with junk and the crankset was toast but most of the other campy components were OK. Over the next year I picked up some replacement C-Record cranks, BB, hubs, cables and housing, jockey pulleys and the other bits needed to rebuild the bike.

I contacted RS to see what the particulars of the build were or if there was anything noteworthy he壇 be willing to share. I never heard back from him. I know the vast majority of Richard痴 bikes ended up in his signature colors but this color is very attractive I think. Also, I致e seen very few RS frames with chrome fork crowns.

Anyway, it痴 nice to finally finish the project and I知 looking forward to getting out on the road soon to see how it rides.

That is a very pretty bike and if I may say so...those are the signature colors a
RS bike should be. Congrats and maybe the maker himself will see this thread as he is a member here and be able to give you some details.

looks quite nice with the h+son TB14 rims, nicer IMO than some old, period correct, rims(except maybe Ambrosio Nemesis). well done!

Those pretty sheriff star C-Record hubs were cannibalized from a tubular wheelset I also found on the bay. They're smooth as silk.

Outstanding build! :hello:

But I think that a vintage bike like this should have tires with tan sidewalls. :)

Hi Brad - I replied to you mentioning that my log books were on loan to House Industries when they were planning the show at The Rapha Club. I didn't have the info you asked for on hand. But I never heard back from you once I wrote back. PS The bicycle looks nice. I hope you enjoy it.

Nice bike, but the way that stem is clamped makes me think the bar is smaller than the stem's clamp spec.

If you weren't aware, in that era stems and bars were made in 26.4, 26.0, 25.9, 25.8, and 25.4 as a I recall. And plenty of bars didn't measure to their respective stated size.

It's missing on of the multi-colored rubber gaskets that were supplied with the stem by Cinelli.

I was thinking the same thing when looking at the bar and stem photo,
the way the stem is tightened down on the bar, the gap is gone which indicates
it's likely a cinelli stem with a 26.4 bore, and the bar has about 26.0 diameter
of the sleeve.

This is a dangerous combo, the "wrap" of the stem can crack which would
sheer off and the bar will spin, the rider will likely lose control.

It's just missing the spacer.

Here's what it looks like on mine:

It's just missing the spacer.

no, it's miss matched size. There is ZERO space for the rubber gasket.
I've seen this 100 times in the last 30 years.

There are huge quantities of 26.4 Cinelli stems out there, with no size markings.
Every other brand, and many later Cinelli bars are 26.0.

its not good. The tip of the clamp is bottomed out right against the bar.
It takes more force than is recommended to tighten an under-sized bar in the stem.

^^^ oof, yea, thats not good at all, probably a 26.4 stem with a 26.0 bar in there...red alert!

Thanks for the heads up everyone. I should have noticed that - I well remember the black spacers with this Cinelli stem.

Indeed, this is a new Nitto Noodle bar with a 26.0 diameter. I'll have to find a new stem.

Looks like mine would w/o the spacer:
There is space for the plastic insert, look at the space where it meets the bar. It's been overtightened, hence zero space at the clamp end.

In any event, since it's been deformed, I would get a new stem.

They come in a variety of colors. I recall when I got my stem (> 20 years ago) that it came with red, white, yellow and black.
Out of curiosity, is there a size stamped on the stem?

And as everyone has said, Nice Bike!

Back in the day, the hot inside tip amongst those in the know was that the metal from one of the oversized Sapporo beer cans was an excellent size to shim between a 26.4 stem and a 26.0 bar.

Just sayin'.

(I have no idea if that's still true today or whether Sapporo has changed their cans!)

What a great find, and awesome job on the build. I would have liked to see a "before" pic too - I like seeing just how bad some project bikes are before they get all the love dumped on them.

Good eyes by the forum mates. If that stem were to fail, you and your bike may have been seriously damaged.

Nope, just the stem's length.

Out of curiosity...what part of the country did it come from?
I used to see a local guy who had one in the same color.

The bike was in Sarasota, FL. I have a brother in that town and after winning the auction, I asked him to retrieve bike for me. Turns out it was in a pawn shop! When it arrived here I found the former owner's name in the bike's saddle bag. I found his obituary online which said he'd retired to FL and was the owner of couple of Harley Davidson dealerships in Iowa and Illinois I believe. I'm not sure when the bike was built (late eighties?) I'm guessing he bought it after moving to FL but at this point only Richard may know.

It might just be a coincidence....but. I live in Sarasota as well. From your description it doesn't sound like the same guy, but what are the odds of two RS in that color in Sarasota? If my memory is correct the bike was originally red, and was refinished by Joe Bell. It was / is a very pretty bike.

Sending you a pm with a question...
