Can any recommend a beannie-style cap for cold winter rides that a) fits under a helmut; b) is wind-proof; and c) is as warm as possible?

This morning the windchill was in the single digits here and my head just about froze on my ride. My old beannie ain't cutting it anymore. Any suggestions greatly, dare I say it, warmly appreciated.

Rapha merino hat, have many of them, excellent bit of kit, will breathe when you get hot and keep the cold out like a champ.

When it's this cold, I use Gore helmet cover with a headband. With this set-up, my head is never the limiting factor in suffering from the chill. (I can't take credit for this--it was Ti Designs' idea.)

I just wear a light Craft beanie with windproof front panel down to about freezing, and the helmet cover below that.

2nd the assos robocop - fleecy lining on the inside - really warm. I sweat in it in the 40s but it still keeps us warm.

Craft makes stupidly warm stuff that fits nicely under the helmet.

I have one from outdoor research that works great when really cold. Looks something like this:

They have more that cover more baklava style too for more warmth. I wear this and and turtle fur when it gets really cold and it works fine.

Nothing beats a balaclava, Craft makes one with WindStopper at the front that's super warm. You actually don't want windproof everywhere because you will sweat and you want something that wicks away that moisture to keep you dry.

I use a gore helmet cover (a Giro ski helmet is the warmest, but it bothers my bad neck because it's a bit heavier), Outdoor Reserach Wind Pro beanie or North Face Gore Tex hat with ear flaps.

I have also been using cat ear 300 wt fleece ear covers with a hat this winter and they make all the difference in the world for me.

Temps under 25 around here require a balaclava and pretty much all fit under a helmet.

I second the recommendation for a helmet cover plus a breathable cap. A windproof cap won't breath well, so head sweat may accumulate. A helmet cover will keep wind off your noggin, but allow enough of an air gap to let sweat evaporate.

Rapha pro team...works well and close fitting so easy under helmet.

Yup.
I don't use my wind proof hats because sweat ends up running into my eyes. Too warm.

And my head gets cold in 60 degree weather.

I agree. I don't ride without my balaclava. I know guys that will ride with just a helmet cover and ear muffs, but the balaclava covers it all, except my nose and face.

Craft makes a decent skullcap that has gore windstopper on the front and is nice and thin to fit nicely under a helmet.
When it starts warming up you can always flip the windstopper to the back if you need more airflow.

Another second (or at this point, third, fourth, or fifth) for the Assos Robocap - it's warm, super lo-pro, and has (I think) handy elastic tabs to keep your glasses in place (which is great when your ears are covered). I ride with the summer equivalent on the flip side of the mercury; it does a great job wicking sweat, and keeping sun off of my forehead (which is more and more exposed with greater and bigger helmet vents).

This thread caused me to order a Robocap...after losing a PI skullcap that I tolerated. Looking forward to getting it.

I have a lightweight Smartwool merino wool beanie that is thin, warm, and doesn't get stinky after multiple uses. Great non-cycling specific piece of gear that fits under a helmet with no issues.
