And you bump into Axel Merckx! I was out for a spin last week and happened upon the Axeon team. They were nice enough to let me tag along for a while and shoot the breeze. At a water/food stop I got a chance to chat a while with Axel. The whole crew was in good spirits and I was stoked to have had such a neat encounter. I was gnawing on a Cliff Bar in the picture lol

Ha ha ha I failed to mention that I was on a training trip in the Los Angeles area. This all happened in the Santa Monica mountains, specifically on the Piuma Rd climb.

Which one's Axel ? Sorry, I had to.

Always cool to unexpectedly run into a pro/ex-pro/person-of-cycling-significance and So Cal is a good place for that.

You can really see the resemblance with his dad around the mouth, eh?

I once ran into a former Belgian team pro, while riding in Aurora, Co at the local reservoir. He wasn't a big name rider, but when he told me to stay off the bike lanes and just ride the roads, I took his advice. He was right. I could then ride as fast as I wanted. Bike lanes are not for the serious riders.

Very cool. Did you get his autograph or any swag?

A life event. He looks so like dad. Sorry, but the Clif bar won't help; you chose to have the wrong parents, like to rest of us mortals.

I didn't get an autograph, but he asked if I needed anything and gave me a bottle with some calories in it. That worked out well since I was running on fumes that day to begin with.
