View Full Version : Too Much Blue?

You think the blue wheel decals are too much? Building the new roadie and took a chance with the blue decals. Not sure if I love it. Starting to think white or nothing may look better. Don't worry, I'm not going to ask if my ass looks fat in these jeans next......

If you like the strobe effect, go with white decals on that. Otherwise, I'm a fan of the muted black

I love Parlee, but that's the only color I like the Altum in. White labels would be better though. The blue's off. No labels would be even better. Make that bike POP. Get the Red off the Red too.

Congrats on a great freaking bike for sure.

Too much even if it's exactly the same color.

Colored decals on carbon wheels always look bad IMO.

I have a couple bikes with red shifters. Slippery when wet. I cut cotton friction tape the shape of paddle to improve grip. You could do the same in black/blue(good luck matching)/white/etc to get rid of red if it bothers you and want to improve performance.

That frame is a very nice color of blue, but the mismatched decal color is detracting from the bike as a whole. I say no decals with a black saddle and bar tape.

Of course everyone has already said it, but the problem is that the blue does not match. I'd vote stealth black first, then white, just depends on your preference.

Current thinking is white tape. Saddle aint goin no place, that's my baby. Guess I could get a black one but ironically I don't care all that much. Maybe white saddle white tape and White decals. Have the decals already. Should have time to cut the steerer and tape the bars tonight. I know you all cant wait to see. Can you see the tongue in the cheek?
Thanks tho for all the input. You all confirmed my suspicions.

I'm in the minority--I like the blue even if it does not quite match. And I was going to say white tape/white saddle...

White on the wheels if the slight mismatch on the blue bugs you.

It will be a thing!

You said you took a chance on the wheel decal color and weren't sure you liked it. Then you took a chance on us!

The blue of the frame seems ( internet color transformation can be deceiving, I will say) to clash enough with the blue of the wheel decals that, if it were mine, I'd peel the decals. The white on the seat post decal works. It seems to me that Handlebra had a white bar tape with blue stitching available that would look great and feel plush.

You appear relatively new, and so missed our old friend and forumite, Pete. He always had a positive contribution, sometimes even just to remind everyone to enjoy the process. And always, to have a glass of red !

Since your location is Napa, I hope when you finish your bike, you get out for a great ride, then admire the new build with a glass of red!

Love the ride (and the hump) - this coming from someone who just bought a Look 675 though.

Same comments as the majority. I'd prefer these wheels with either white, black or no decals. Having said this, I'd be tempted to keep the blue on for a while just to see if it grows on me. I've always found that changing up small things over time with the same bike allows you to snuff out the urge for a new purchase. Not sure about white bar tape though. It will look nice until it gets dirty. I'm in the same bind myself! I'd be tempted to just go with black because of this.

Do those ZIPP water bottle holders work? It looks like it's only a matter of time until the bottle flies out the bottom and into the pack of riders behind you...

I saw a bike done up in the old Gulf Oil scheme at Tour de Big Bear last year. It was every bit as striking on a bike as it was on the car, though admittedly lacking in subtlety.

Example of ways to smoothly bring three major color groups together - blue, white, black without a "blotchy" look. In this way the primary colors blend well enough that the eye doesn't get stuck in any one spot as you scan across the bike. Basically turns into a "pattern" and another color (or not) can be the focal point. Lampre and V-DCM have both used this scheme.

Not having the wheel stickers match exactly becomes a fourth major color (because of the size of the stickers) and all of them compete for attention simultaneously. Too much chaos (for my eye) if you're shooting for a refined look.

As you have it, it won't go any slower or handle any different. Easiest and least expensive way to "pull it together" with added pop is to use white wheel stickers. Of course, easiest is to peel the stickers and ride. Another option would be to change both the wheel stickers and frame logo colors so they match and are a complimentary color of blue to the frame. Then work with solid bar tape or tape that integrates 2-3 of the colors.

Regardless of the colors you choose - enjoy the ride!!

Martini is somewhat understated in racing livery. That's not to say it isn't a powerful statement, but without the large canvas that is a car it may just come across as a white bike with blue and red stripes. Which I'm sure can look great, but its different from Gulf. Gulf is bold, contrasting and screams look at me even when splashed on the limited surfaces. Now, if you want both bold and classy, British racing green with gold stripe.

Agree completely. Just over the default of "We want to make an homage to racing livery, let's copy the Gulf one!"

That British Racing Green and gold is another one that was top of mind. When you see it, gosh, its gorgeous.

Agree with others, this rig look best without the blue. I would add that replacing the black hoods with white ones would make the bar/tape/saddle really tie in with the logo which offset the frame so well.

Does sram make hoods in different colors?
