Except calf size does not seem to relate to calf strength.

I'd love to try out one of those early derailleurs.

A guy who went by the handle of DBRK used to write lots of posts about all the classic bike stuff and how Mike Barry of Toronto had a lot of those vintage bikes and still rode them well from time to time.
