Kind of an odd question, but here goes.
Tempted to upgrade to Shimano 11-speed (105 or Ultegra), but want to avoid replacing my nice, non-11-road compatible CK ISO hubs. As I understand, those hubs will work with Shimano 11-speed mountain cassettes. Will an otherwise 11-speed road groupset play nice with an 11-speed mountain cassette? I'm sure it's not suggested, but curious if anyone has had success.

I thought 11sp MTB cassette spacing was the same as 10sp, and the large sprocket cantilevers out towards the spokes, over the hub flange?

You can use a 11 speed 11-32 cassette on a 10 speed hub. It will work with a Ultegra or 105 rear derailuer.
Edit: I just learned that a mountain cassette is not a 32t max. I dont know when that happened.

I don't think this is true? I don't think you can get a 5800 cassette of any sort on a ck 10 so hub

Is the 11-32 a 5800? I didnt check. Maybe its the 11-34 or 11-36. I dunno. To me 11-32's are for mountain bikes and I didnt check which is which. I stand corrected.
Edit:
Jeebus, I just checked. I have no idea which size is mountain bike. 42t out back? When did that happen? I must be under a rock.
Dont trust what I said above. I have no idea what the hell I am talking about.

This is my understanding as well. Since the large cog can/is moved inward they can fit them on a 10-sp freehub. The problem, at least for me, is that the mtn cassettes are very large - either 11-40 or 11-42.

Ok, so it sounds like in theory... while I would rather have a 28 or 32 cassette, I could probably use something like the Wolftooth roadlink (http://www.wolftoothcomponents.com/collections/small-components/products/roadlink) to mate an 11-40 XT 8000 cassette to a 105/Ultegra rear der (GS, probably?).
I'm, again, just spitballing, but with the limits adjusted properly (if possible) to accommodate the inboard shift of the cassette, it should work. There isn't a different cog spacing or anything between road and mountain?
Or, just get some new wheels along with everything else...

If you search Amazon, you'll run across the Token 11 on a 10 cassette if you want to use your old wheels for a bit longer.
EDCO is making one too, but I haven't searched as hard for those

From my understanding this is correct. Have not tried it though.

I recently also heard about the wheels manufacturing campy 11s cassette for shimano 8/9/10 freehub accelerator cassette. Also works since campy 11 = shimano 11.

Wheels manufacturing also.. 11s cogset onto a 10s FH body.

says for Campag 11s but close to shimano 11s spacing.

yeah, except it says it's not compatible with CK hubs. and shimano DA/Ultegra factory wheelsets. another huge bummer as those are also awesome and sucks to leave 'em in 10 speed land.
I've looked into this one before when I found deals on wheels with CK classic 10 speed hubs. I'm not sure there's any way around it, unfortunately. upgrade all your derailleurs and crankset and wait until you sell the wheels to upgrade shifters and cassette?

While it sounds like something that I *could* do, it also sounds like it's going to be far more hassle and not really save me that much cash in the long run. So, doable, but should just save up for a newer wheelset...
