View Full Version : Source for down tube barrel adjusters

I'm looking for some barrel adjusters for a new build. As far as something different I've only found the ones offered by Fairwheel Bikes. The others I've found are just the standard ones.

Not sure what I'm looking for. As trite as it sounds, I'll know it when I see it. Just looking for that little extra that helps to set a custom build apart.

I'm surprised there are very few options.

Anybody have a source for barrel adjusters?

Thanks

are you looking for ones that bolt onto dt shifter bosses? IRD has some nice ones that have a split, so it's easy to remove the cable

I'm looking for different options. Something along these lines. I've searched the internet but have only found the Jagwire ones, and the ones from Fairwheel.

+1 kirks brass adjusters are the best I've ever seen and used. $15 and no corrosion!

Some far and near ones available here. Not sure if they are what you saw on the fairwheel page

Anyone have pics of the Kirk Brass Barrel Adjusters on a bare titanium frame? The adjusters on my Moots need to be replaced and Kirk's adjusters look pretty nice but just not sure how brass would look against brushed Ti.

I will in a few days. I ordered a set on Monday and they should be here any time. I have a Lynskey Helix, fyi.

I really like the Dura Ace "winged" adjusters (www.ebay.com/itm/Shimano-Dura-Ace-STI-Downtube-Shifter-Cable-Stops-Barrel-Adjusters-Complete-Kit-/291163397029).

I have bought several sets from this seller but unfortunately the price seems to have gone up $10. You might find a set for less from someone else.

I think it was Dave Kirk that used to have some really nice brass ones

Went with the Paragon Machine Works. I think stainless works better with Titanium.

Looks like you're done here. But agree, the Paragon Machine Works stainless steel ones look great on bare ti and are the exact same design as Kirk's brass ones. Have them on my Hampsten and Spectrum ti frames.

David Kirk's brass barrel adjusters will look good on ANY frame. They are brass for the practical reason that they don't corrode the way aluminum will. Glad I got them.

I have them on my Lynskey. I don't care about color matching, but do note that the brass color is so subtle that you can hardly tell a difference versus the titanium.

Sorry Jeff. Looks like I forgot to post pics of them like I said that I would back in September.

Can't use the Serotta ones. Those are M6x1. The normal size is M5x0.8

No worries. I think Kirk's brass adjusters are the best for long term corrosion resistance. If the Paragon bits start "sticking", I'll be following your example and rocking brass.

I got some from lynskey. They are nicer than the plastic ones that came my Dura Ace gruppo.

do we know what a hampsten would have? M5 or M6?

I would bet it's an M5x0.8. That's the standard. Not sure why Serotta used that M6 one.

built by IF so it probably M5. Thanks sales guy.

also, both Paragon of DK don't include the springs, where would I be able to source these from?

If you have a Grainger near you, check them out. Prices are a little high for "non" contractors, but they were the only source I could find for stainless springs.

You can get springs from a local hardware store. I've done that before when I've f'ed one up or lost it or something. They will have a large selection and usually longer than you need. So take your adjuster and just cut it down. File the ends a bit so they spin and spin smoothly.

If it's built by IF, yeah, it would be an M5.

M5 is the common downtube adjuster size. Same with the bottle bosses, rack and fender mounts and the standard downtube mounts for downtube shifters of old.

Thanks SG, will check the local hardware store. Or maybe the current plastic ones have a spring I can steal from.

They will. But they are usually a bit looser tension. Thinner also. But yeah, they will. Since the plastic ones have detents molded in they use a looser, thinner spring. If you get the thicker one it will stiffen up things and not let them back out as well as not let them rattle around. A local hardware store like Ace would have multiple styles and tensions. Just take a drill bit, long M5x0.8 bolt or if you have the adjuster, then that and you can get the right shape.
