Thinking of trying to boost capability of a 5800 GS derailleur to handle a SRAM 11-36 cassette as an experiment. Seems the wolftooth site only discusses using the goatlinks with Shimano MTB derailleurs in order to handle SRAM 42t wide range cassettes of the WT 44t pie plate.

Compatibility: The GoatLink is compatible with all Shimano 10s Shadow+ rear derailleurs that make use of the Direct Mount intermediate link to mount to standard derailleur hangers. Direct Mount-native hangers and SRAM derailleurs are not supported. Shimano eleven-speed derailleurs are not supported at this time.

Nevermind, it appears there is the exact part I need just called the RoadLink. Sorry for the forum clutter!

good to know though. i hadn't heard of these things, and they look like a good simple product. let us know how it goes.

I bought a RoakLink but haven't used it yet. It's a backup just in case my Ultegra GS has issues w/an 11-36 cassette I plan to install. It's a very nice piece - very well made. And, yes, a simple solution to a potential problem. Now only have to worry about adequate chain wrap.

Stupid question - will Roadlink only work with medium cage RDs or will it work with short cage too?

I might think about this instead of messing around with SRAM or turning the b screw around backwards

stupid answer (because I have no experience) is that it should work as long as you don't have a tooth capacity problem. All derailleurs have a maximum number of teeth that they can wrap the chain. So going from a 11-32 to a 11-36 is dependent on you being able to wrap 4 more teeth

Not stupid at all. Unterhausen is correct- you're limited by the cage's ability to take up variation in effective length. While you can look at your specific model's tooth capacity to see if it'd work with an 11-40, as a general rule we suggest that short cage derailleurs stick with an 11-36t cassette and single chainring when used with a short cage:

AngryScientist is right- the RoadLink is exactly what you'd be looking for!

As stated, road link is whatcha want. They're nifty things, definitely boost compatibility.

We've done a couple goatlinks on some mtbs in the shop. Cool stuff.
