This one hits me hard. Big fan, though not necessarily a fan of Harry Potter stuff. I may need to revisit those with my six year old.

My favorite film of his was actually the 2008 "Bottle Shock" about the legendary 1976 California vs. France wine competition....

RIP good man.

Very sad new! He will be missed. My favorite of his films was "Truly Madly Deeply".

Indeed, very sad. I am on the same boat, even though he is well known for the HP role, I prefer some of his other work.

:(

Lemmy, David Bowie, and Alan Rickman all lost to cancer in such a short span.

Ugh. Bad week for 69-year-olds with cancer.
Not a fan of the Potter movies, but Rickman was fabulously iconic in Die Hard, and his Spock-like alien in Galaxy Quest was hysterical.

"I wanted this to be professional, efficient, adult, cooperative. Not a lot to ask. Alas, your Mr. Takagi did not see it that way... so he won't be joining us...for the rest of his life."

RIP Alan.

I'm just floored right now. My wife's favorite actor and crush is gone. I feel like I've lost an in-law.

I really liked Bottle Shock as well. Great actor and his presence really enhanced any film. RIP

Very sad to read the news this morning. I watch Die Hard every year sometime during the month of December.

Always fond of this line too from Dogma.

I've never seen any of the Die Hard or Harry Potter movies - didn't even know he was in them! I first saw him (or noticed him) in Dogma, which was one of my favorite movies of that year and a few on either side of it. And then Bottle Shock put him over the top for me. As well as a nice mellow little turn in Love Actually, in which he, along with all of the other stars in that movie, just had a pretty small part, where he was married to and contemplating cheating on Emma Thompson. Why would anyone EVER do that??? Kind of oddly cast as Ronald Reagan in The Butler - the last thing I remember seeing him in...

He was a really really good one. One of those artists you felt like you sort of knew through his art...

My brother is 68 - I'm getting nervous...

I thought he was fantastic in that role...specifically because I did not recognize him at all.

He was amusingly evil/campy in Quigley Down Under too.

Don't forget Dogma and his character, Metatron.

Metatron: You people. If there isn't a movie about it, it's not worth knowing, is it?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bethany: What's he like?

Metatron: God? Lonely. But funny. He's got a great sense of humor. Take sex for example. There's nothing funnier than the ridiculous faces you people make mid-coitus.

Bethany: Sex is a joke in heaven?

Metatron: The way I understand it, it's mostly a joke down here, too.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Metatron: Human beings have neither the aural nor the psychological capacity to withstand the awesome power of God's true voice. Were you to hear it, your mind would cave in and your heart would explode within your chest. We went through five Adams before we figured that one out.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bethany: Were they sent to Hell?

Metatron: Worse. Wisconsin. For the entire span of human history.

He played a gigolo in a Texas Video clip like 10 or 15 years ago. He rocked the character even thought we are talking about a guy that is not handsome at all and because he has no lines, danced pretty good too.

Oh, wait, I stand corrected: In Quigley Down Under he was just evil; it was Robin Hood where Rickman's campiness went completely over-the-top...and wound up being the best part about that flick.

Who's forgetting Dogma - look about three posts up... First movie I mentioned because it's the first I remember taking note of him. But then the movie was so good and the lines so good, and Chris Rock and Linda Fiorentino and George Carlin. And Alanis Morrisette was God, for god's sake! I'm not sure I could have possibly NOT liked Alan Rickman in that movie... I'm gonna have to dig that one up and check it up again...
