That right there is the Wissell Slide (Michael Wissell is a local [really good] CX racer)

I call it a reason why I ride ROAD bikes.

the only way to make CX better is to add a slip-and-slide. awesome.

I wonder if he did that every lap?

Probably quicker down that hill than most of his competitors.

And definitely more in control... he's steering with his feet on the way down.

Classic.

Isn't that Eric's friend? Isn't that the Geekhouse team?

The fact that he held on and got into a position to hop right back on is impressive. I'd probably be on my head with my bike still back up top.

let it be known, mike is a very experienced/fast cx racer.

he did this because by the last few laps of the race his brake pads (mechanical disc) had worn down far enough that the brakes were useless.

it was that "special" kind of mud that destroys disc pads. also a wet cinder track feature contributed to the expedited wear.

anyways, because of this, his slide was actually faster than running and safer than riding down that descent, which was extremely gnarly and saw a TON of crashes that day in every race.

im just shocked it took this long for the gif to "go viral" as this happened in november of 2014...i remember it like it was yesterday.

RIP Baystate CX

The awesome is in the execution. It's as if he did slide drills, this hand on the top tube, pull into the slide with your heels ....

Perfect form.

That is just plain cool! I admire the guy for thinking of that.

The thought of a mud enema would keep me from ever trying such a technique.
