View Full Version : NAHBS 2016 Sacramento Roll Call

Daughter Bumblebee just moved to Sacto for a new job and it looks like I'm going to head out there the weekend before the show to see her, explore the area for the week, and go to the show Friday and Saturday . . .

Anybody else know for sure yet they are going or live in the area?

Bike Rental? . . . I could really use some tips on where to rent (or borrow) a decent ride for the week. Folsom Bike has some good rentals listed on their website but has not answered my email yet. I'd love to take my own bike, but the shipping risk and cost are turning me off. But I probably will ship the bits to Daughter Bee in advance . . . pedals, shoes, helmet, etc.

Hotels? . . . Daughter Bee lives in Rancho Cordova so looking for something close to her, but anything inexpensive really gets savaged on Google Reviews, Yelp, etc. The hotels closer in to downtown get nicer reviews, but the price also ramps up steeply. Anybody have anyplace they would vouch for as not being Cocaine/Cockroach/Bedbug Central?

Rides? . . . American River Parkway is a given, but where else? I lived in Vacaville from 89-92, so I'm a bit familiar with the area. I'm hoping to get over to the Napa Valley one day during the week. Anybody thinking about a Paceline group ride?

Paceline Group Dinner? . . . At past shows there has usually been some sort of gathering, (I think) usually on Friday night. Any interest this year?

Weather? . . . End o' February weather forecast? Clothes to bring?

Thanks . . .

BBD

Hmmm....we have a baby due a couple weeks before that so probably won't make it.

Or maybe just bring her along. You know, start her off on the right foot and everything.

Whether you are in the market for a custom bike or not NAHBS is really fun to attend. The eye candy will blow your mind regardless of which builders come or stay home. Don't look at the builder list just go.

I'll probably arrend on Friday

It's about a 20 minute bike ride for me to get to the convention center. Back in 2012 when NAHBS was there they had a bike valet service so you didn't have to fret about the nightmarish parking. I can vouch for an Airb&b literally in eyeshot of my front porch that is quite reasonably priced. I am also down for an american river trail ride sometime during that week/end.

There's got to be a cheap swa flight from John Wayne to Sacramento so you could do a day trip

My guess is the show will never be in SoCal so if not now, when would you go? Anywhere else is more time and money

You speak the truth though there has been a persistent rumor of the show coming to Long Beach.

I had a chance to have a NAHBS bike this year built for me...went with another builder instead and thusly forfeited my chances. That would have definitely put me there though.

I could see a case for LB but that would be after heading back to the Midwest and east coast again. Making it three years plus from now.

i live in Davis which is roughly 15 miles to the west of downtown Sac. Many members of our bike club (the aptly named Davis Bike Club, host of the annual Davis Double Century amongts other things) rode over to the last show and the bike valet service was great. Some good local and not so local rides are listed on our website with maps and GPS info.

start here:

http://www.davisbikeclub.org/rides-and-events/route_maps

Categories are on the left hand side.

I don't really know about hotels over in the eastern Sac region (Rancho Cordova, Folsom, etc). Sorry. Some decent ones here in Davis but prolly the wrong direction for you. Let me know if you got any more questions and I'll try to help. Oh right...I will be at the show.

You (or anyone) is welcome to come along on any of our daily club rides...generally pretty low key, some faster paced ones, etc. They are all on the website.

edit; The Folsom Bike club is also quite large (700+), has a strong program and has lots of daily rides....they use MeetUp so I think you need to sign up to get info.

I'm local. Several national chain hotels in Rancho Cordova - in laws always stay at the Hilton right of Hwy 50. A bit further east but right on the American River bike trail is the Lake Natoma Inn. I can't vouch for the quality but location is great for riding.

I'm planning on attending and happy to connect with fellow Paceliners for a ride. I live about 10 min from the convention center.

I can HIGHLY recommend Bike Dog Brewing Company. Award winning beers and run by some bike afficionados. They even have their own Voler Gear. It's in West Sacramento (a separate city across the Sac. river) so you'll need a car or short bike ride (couple of miles from NAHBS) but well worth the trip. :hello:

Not sure which day(s), but I plan to be there.

For other Bay Area and especially East Bay folks, consider bringing your bike on Amtrak and riding the short distance (one mile? Two?) to the event. The Richmond Amtrak and BART stations are literally right next to each other, close enough that you will never actually have to deal with, you know, Richmond, so combining with BART is viable. Other potentially useful Amtrak stations are in Martinez, Berkeley and Emeryville, although there is no BART access to those.

The trip is short enough, there is enough bike parking on board (unlike most Amtrak trains) and the trains run often enough to make it feasible. No traffic, no parking hassles (as others have said, they had great valet bike parking the last the show was in Sacratomato), easy peasy lemon squeasy.

Nahbs is too expensive for me, sure it's cool, I went to Indy when it was a 5 hrs drive, but even if I were buying a bike, there really is no reason to spend close to a grand to go. Nahbs really hates the Midwest as far as I can tell.

Very expensive, four Nahbs and two new bikes later. Definitely not going this yea, probably wait for East coast venue closer to home. Been to Indy, Richmond, Austin, and Denver and the show has changed over time. Haven't seen the vendors but some of the builders I like to see either attend every other year or stopped. Lots of soft goods/swag to be had.

Thanks

The Rubicon is another great working brewery very close (walking distance) to the NAHBS.

BikeDog is a bit of a weird location, not sure why they chose that location. I'm sure the rent was pretty cheap as its a pretty industrial area.

I'll give one more shameless plug since this is a biking crowd. Please come over to Davis and visit the official US Bicycling Hall of Fame. Yes, its in Davis. A group of locals rescued it about 6-7 yrs ago. from a strip mall in New Jersey, I think, where it was languishing. It's small and we've had long-term funding issues of our own but has some cool bikes on display (the Boneshaker is my favorite) and every year they induct people into the Hall of Fame (like Jacquie Phelan, Tom Ritchey, Greg Lemond, some guy named Andy Hampsten, etc).

Just reserved flights and room at this hostel. I stayed at one in Asheville 2 years ago and it was great! Plus this place is right downtown, near my daughter's office, and I can ride light rail to her place. Perfect! Thanks, cnighbor! You ROCK!

I also just sent a rental request to Folsom Bike. We'll see if they have one available.

I'm arriving Saturday evening Feb. 20, plan to do something with my daughter on Sunday, but then Monday-Wednesday she's at work and I'm looking for stuff to do. Hopefully I can get over to Napa Valley one day and do the American River Trail another and the weather won't suck. Thursday with Daughter Bumblebee, then show on Friday, hopefully Paceline dinner/party Friday evening and fly out Saturday AM.

Wooo-HOOOO!

Anybody available for rides Monday-Wednesday? Local attraction suggestions also appreciated. I visited the railroad museum 25+ years ago and it was great at that time. Any good local strip clubs? :p

You should be good if you spend one whole day at the show. Unless it's grown exponentially--which I doubt it has--you can see it all in one day. Also if there's schwag to be had or bought the best selection will be on day one. In Charlotte the sock companies had some screaming deals and some builders had nice t-shirts. There was also a bike insurance company there that was giving away cool little multi-tools.

Trade shows - been there both as an attendee and vendor.
So, a few notes:

1) an advance ticket will save some money and check-in time. If you know for sure which day, get one. If not, don't' worry about it. Friday better than Saturday (no one there), Saturday better than Sunday (biggest crowd, but some leave early Sunday)

2) be prepared for sensory overload. the bikes, the noise.

3) wear comfortable shoes (duh)

4) bring a backpack, musette, carry bag. there are freebies and things to buy, whether "official" NAHBS stuff or small items the builders are selling. Did I mention my titanium paragon bottle opener makes me happy?

5) bring cash, and small bills. this isn't Walmart with credit card machines.

6) Convention hall food, if they have any, is terrible. I bring my own water and a sandwich.

7) I used to take pictures but now there are so many more pics online with much better cameras. why bother. then again, glad I had my camera when potts ritchey and fisher were together.

8) if you really want to talk to a builder, identify the ones that matter to you and try to talk to them early - before the masses.

9) One year Don Walker offered a shot of scotch with purchase of his scotch glasses. Of course I bought two.

10) if you want king cages - stainless, iris, ti this is the time to buy.

11) If you are not close to buying, you can see everything in one day. in fact, there may be a moment early afternoon while starting your second lap you begin wondering why am I here crawling past the same bikes again (and again)(and again)

Very true. The motivation is at its earnest when the hunter-gatherer instinct is honed and attuned in targeting the n+1 acquisition. But ya never know how things'll turn out.

In 2014 I went to Charlotte NAHBS for the sole purpose of meeting Dario. Kent Eriksen was also a vendor there and I had some interest but not as a buyer - or so I thought. Because a month after NAHBS I put my order in to Eriksen. Where the hell did that come from!?

My point being some of the best of the best exhibit at NAHBS. If you like bikes, there will be tales left untold and bikes yet to be ridden in a world of bikes that is the antithesis of the mass market big-box-bike. NAHBS is the annual reminder to those who like custom bikes why we stay far away from the meatgrinder of the mass market big-box-bike industry.

hopefully Paceline dinner/party Friday

You folks attending Sac, find a way to make this happen. Meet BBD and other Paceliners direct, face to face and share a meal and some laughs. There is nothing like meeting somebody you've never met in person before but already know through this forum. Easiest dinner conversations you'll ever have with some of the nicest people. I wish I would be there.

Kent and his wife are two of the nicest and sincere folks on the show floor. Of course his work also speaks for itself. It's not a surprise you quickly got comfortable moving ahead with him.

The Charlotte dinner was more fun than the show, I thought. Great company and a great time.

NAHBS has something to scratch just about every itch. The Charlotte show, Dave Wages brought this gorgeous SLX tubed, 25th Dura Ace grouped road bike. And Calfee had their all wood, mountain, belt drive eBike with axe handles for fork blades.

It covers the gamut.

The Charlotte dinner was more fun than the show, I thought. Great company and a great time.

I'll raise this item only because FlashUNC is too modest to credit himself for his part in making the 2014 NAHBS-Charlotte dinner a success.

FlashUNC was our inside man in this dinner escapade because he lived in Charlotte at the time. He knew the restaurants and picked a place to seat and feed a buncha crazy Paceliners. He made the reservations and worked it through with BBD and made it happen.

So somebody local in Sacramento, stand up and do what needs to be done to make a Paceline dinner happen. If nobody picks up the ball it will not come off. So put that home turf advantage to work. And visiting Paceliners - don't hem and haw about maybe being able to make dinner. Make a commitment and GO.

All you lucky NAHBS attendees can thank me later.

Do they know yet where NAHBS will be next year or for the next couple of years?

A lot of these venues can get booked out 2-3 years in advance, believe it or not, at least during the popular times (and you have to sign a contract and pay some real $$ to committ).
I'm not familiar with the NAHBS parent org. but if its like most, its just a small front office and they are doing their best to scout possible sites and watch their dimes and nickels (while trying to get the current yrs show up and running).

Kent and his wife are two of the nicest and sincere folks on the show floor. Of course his work also speaks for itself. It's not a surprise you quickly got comfortable moving ahead with him.

I have no business talking to Rob English, but I will temp fate and spend time in his booth. It could be a slippery slope from there.

I always take a wide berth around Rob's booth as it's "danger danger will robinson". You're a better man than I being able to even look in his booth's direction. If I walk past and you need me to toss you a "life preserver" give me "the signal"...

Who's riding in? I'm riding from Concord to Sacramento (http://bit.ly/eastbaysacramento) on Saturday. Also, in for the 9:00am Sunday morning social group ride (http://bit.ly/eastbaysacramento) around town before the show.

I'll have a set of carbon wheels on one of the Sycip bikes being shown, one of the MMFGs, and I may have one being shown off by Wheel Fanatyk as well. I personally will be milling around the show floor - hit me up!

. . . I gather nobody is interested in any rides Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday while I'm in town, footloose and fancy free? I will have a Domane 4.3 and will see how it rides with that IsoSpeed thingy.

At this point I've mapped out one route out of Vacaville, up Pleasants Valley to the Glory Hole at Berryessa. That's about 40 mile round trip, and also several routes in the Napa Valley, primarily along Silverado Trail.

What about a Paceline dinner Friday evening the 26th after the show? Looking for a local who knows the restaurant scene, as I'm assuming nobody wants to have the dinner at either Carl's Jr. or In 'N Out Burger. That's the extent of my knowledge of the local restaurant scene.

BBD

I'm recently funemployed! Monday is booked as I'm having a hitch for a rack installed on the car. Wednesday, I'm riding a 200k in the East bay. Tuesday and Thursday are open. I'll be at the show all weekend.

Lots of great dining options now in Midtown Sacramento; it has become quite the epicurean scene lately. Also lots of great beer in Sac now!

Tank House BBQ ain't too bad....lots of beers on tap and decent BBQ in a casual pub setting. Probably not a good place for the Paceline dinner, though.

If we are going to do a Friday night dinner some decisions need to be made!

I was at an Irish pub last night called De Vere's. Couple of blocks from the Convention Center, good beer selection, decent food. Show closes at 6. Does this place and 6:30 work?

Viewing your potential NAHBS visit as half-empty as opposed to half-full ? There are still a lot of awesome builders showing and I know for a fact that a few listed as not attending in the "skipping" thread will actually be there representing another brand or simply walking the floor.

I went to NAHBS in 2014, so much more there than you would think. If you are a bike geek, go, it's awesome. I got to talk with Shimano reps and cycle Di2 shifters, talk with Mavic, Rolf and Boyd himself. Got to talk to Mate Zukas, Nick Crumpton, Bill Holland, got to talk to Pro Wheel Builders, Chris King reps, Brooks, Fizik...
There is so much stuff at these shows, go for the people who did exhibit though. I learned some things and had some great conversations.
It's our Comicon.

Hey BBD--Mojo, myself and some other local miscreants will be there Friday. Dinner after the show sounds good. Lots of places near the CC to choose from. I'm sure we'll come up with something for all.

I've attended three NAHBSes already and have seen plenty of very cool bikes. Now it's about seeing people rather than bikes, and the people I want to see -- Dave Kirk, Richard Sachs, Tom Kellogg, Dario, et al. -- aren't coming.

After much rearranging of plans, etc., and for reasons not worth going into here, I will only be at the show on Sunday. I'll be riding up from the southern end of Sacto (Pocket-Greenhaven neighborhood), so if you see a rather large fellow in bike togs and an obnoxiously green Swiss Army backpack, feel free to say hello. :hello:

Or Don't. See if I care.

Those of you going tomorrow-- spend a few minutes talking to Doriano De Rosa in booth 84-- Bixxis-- A real deal old school builder with years of experience and thousands of frames under his belt who I got a feeling was not getting the love he was hoping for, go check him out, the bikes are pretty damn nice and he's a nice guy.

spent the day there today...lots of good stuff to see, my favs: English, Crumpton, Holland, Strong, DeNucci, and Rex. there were lots of other great builders there and pretty much the only place on this coast to see them in one place.
