He's never had a cycling coach, doesn't use power meters or heart-rate monitors. But he is a big fan of Strava. :)

What an inspiration for an old guy like me-at 61;)

I've never had anything close to his motor but it's all about having fun isn't it ?

Man, he really is an inspiration, like the Mick Jagger of cycling - in a good way. I remember being late 20's thinking WOW, THAT GUY IS 36????Cuz that was over the hill in my head.

Yeah he is an inspiration. I just got my azz handed to me at Cyclocross Nationals last Wednesday by a bunch of 'old' guys. I've definitely fallin' into the 'I'm getting older' trap and not training as much as I used to and there is no better way then to make that more apparent then to show up at a nationals event. Yikes!

Guys like him are true freaks of biological nature. They are on some level super human compared to us mortals.

And no mole.

He is still a beast, though.

If you scramble his name a bit, you get " end over end" , which he doesn't ever seem to do, even at 48.6 mph down sketchy gravel. Yikes.

Thanks, a good read. A 2:28 marathoner. Have any other bike racers beat that?

I don't think so.

Laurent Jalabert - Barcelona Marathon 2007 (2:45:52)
Rolf Aldag - Hamburg Marathon 2006 (2:42:54)
Abraham Olano - San Sebastian Marathon 2006 (2:39:19)

Steve Larsen ran a 1:12 trail half marathon, so he was probably capable of doing 2:28 on a fast asphalt course.

Nice article. But lets not play down the motor. Doesn't know his vo2max? Sure. Guy has genetic gifts.

Yeah, let's not ignore god given abilities.

Things I took away:

He's adapted well by avoiding the dopers and changing "sports within the sport" many a time.

Never had a major career interrupting injury, which is quite the lucky achievement, in the world of MTB racing.

The Fat bike racing has helped prevent that quick loss of training levels in old age mentioned late in the article, allowing for serious training in the winter.

He likes being alone. He doesn't even need a wife to coddle him and support his racing. I found that a little striking that she could basically care less most of the time. Interesting relationship.

And, finally, was that a typo, or a Strava malfunction? About 45mph downhill on a non paved surface without, I assume, body armor? That man has balls.

Old time MTb racer - no suspension, no body armor and like the others he'd typically do the XC and downhill events. Ned is the man.

It's doable. My buddies and I hit 46mph on descending Deer Park Road on D2R2. It's dirt, it's crowned, and it's FAST! Not for the faint of heart, or for cyclocross bikes.

The true definition of, "beast mode!"

I worked in a shop in 1998 and we had his poster on the wall. He was a beast back then, and is still a beast today. Wish I could say the same for myself!
