My first reaction is that his is a solution in search of a problem. What is the need? A HUD may be indispensable in a fighter plane, and may have some application in automobiles, but it will just be a distraction on a bike. I'd be concerned that if you are in an accident while wearing one of these, you will be found contributorily negligent and at least partially responsible for any injuries you or others sustain.

I can read my GPS just fine with it mounted to my stem, without really looking down for more than a split second.

that sure looks like it blocks a chunk of peripheral vision.

one of my favorite parts of cycling is escaping the barrage of information.

Think what this would mean for Chris Froome!

No more looking at his stem!

edited to add: I'm intrigued, but not enough to be an early adopter

One would think that a key element or feature in these smart glasses would be the ability to see behind you. Yet its not included. As mentioned above, a solution where no problem exists.

Sorta, it pairs with the rear light with the radar and it'll tell you what's coming up behind you

DC Rainmaker says it doesn't obstruct peripheral vision, but it would have to obstruct vision in some sense. http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2016/01/garmin-varia-vision-hud.html

Or the view of his stem would be obstructed.:(

that is, in a word, ridiculous.

Yeah I dunno. I can see the value in this during real training work. Structured stuff, intervals, etc.

Any other ride, social or group ride etc this would be annoying as hell. I can just look to the front of my bars to know how I am doing.

I like data a lot. I ride with an HRM and power meter on all my bikes save for MTB. This...this is probably overkill even for me. My new coach says your head unit is for recording data, displaying is often secondary.

One way I could see this being useful was if you had a computer giving you turn by turn directions, and could see those directions on the HUD rather than looking down at the computer. This product will actually do that if I'm not mistaken. This would probably actually be a safer option than looking down. I don't have a computer that does this so I won't be buying the new Garmin HUD, but I'd consider it if I navigated this way.

Anyone ever driven a car w/ a Heads Up Display? It's awesome. You'll use one and won't want to go back.

I applaud Garmin for still investing in the bike segment. Is this a product, especially at this iteration, something I want or would get? Hells no. Can I see where this is going and the value it can have for a cyclist? Hells Yea.

if only they focused on making better GPSs instead of garbage like this.

So it gives you your heart rate and turns your route into something reminiscent of a bad LSD trip?

Awesome!

Apparently it also lets you know that you have an incoming call. Thank goodness, because if/when my phone in my jersey pocket rings, I'm not sure what to make of it.

It may not block peripheral vision but sure looks like it would have to block straight ahead vision.

I feel half blind when my wife has the sun visor down (unnecessarily) in the car, I don't think I'd like this. If it was transparent, then maybe.

This new technology is very similar to the night vision that comes standard on the Cyberdyne System's T-800.

DC Rainmaker actually likes it...

Gotta admit they did a pretty good job on it for a v1.0, at least compared to Google Glass (they only other similar product I've ever tried).

Google didn't even get that there product wouldn't work for people with prescription glasses, Garmin at least gets that.

Super cool. Love the technology. Very interested to see how it evolves.

Get MUCH more data--Blood pressure, HR, power (from individual leg muscles)
Sweat rate
Blood sugar
Cadence
Upcoming incline data
Speed of everyone else in the pack
Lactate levels
Glycogen storage
Level of banned substances in blood stream
did I forget anything?

If we're lucky this will one day lead to incorporating bicycles into the self-driven vehicle grid. No more manual piloting anything or collisions of any kind.:banana:

Can't wait!

I barely use a cell, the gps i have in the car was a gift from a friend that was going to put it the trash because was old... my cars are old and nothing fancy. Now I wonder why people might want this, because if the guy that is driving did not see you anyways now you might end up with face with more cuts due to the screen and xtra plastic around your face.

That you can see the car approaching doesn't mean the car is not going to hit you or that the rider knows what to do. Cool product? hell yes!
