Haven't seen anyone mention this but there's an interview by Edmond Hood on Pez Cycling that I thoroughly enjoyed. As a rule I like Hood's stuff, best writing on the site for me, and he did a terrific interview with the first woman soigneur in the pro ranks in Europe. Interesting and intelligent woman, Shelly Verses. The interview is in two parts, the first part is here (http://http://www.pezcyclingnews.com/interviews/pez-retro-talk-shelley-verses-part-1/#.Voj__VK0fC4)

I enjoyed that.
I was surprised to read her take on Paul Koechli. In Slaying the Badger, he seemed like a slimy a-hole.

Great interview and since I started out in the mid 80's it really is nice to read more about my version of cycling's golden era. The 80's were really a transformative time in the sport in so many ways.

...about my version of cycling's golden era...

Yep, exactly! She was at ground-zero for stuff we could only read about in cycling monthlies or watch on the occasional Sunday afternoon Wide World of Sports.

"We are all captains!" Bob Roll when asked who the 7-11 captain was at the Giro.

Wow - the stories she must have - If she writes a book I will be first in line to buy it - thanks for sharing.

Great recollections, coaxed nicely, told with humor and pride. What fun. Thanks for the heads up!

Thanks! Reliving some of those memories... and she has such a positive perspective.

The golden age of cycling indeed.

Good read, thanks. Though I was riding in the 70's I really didn't start following the sport until the 80's,this brings back fond memories from Winning as if it were the Bible (well it was gospel to me). :)

Eddy B. told me he hand-selected all the soigneurs to work at the U.S. Olympic Training Center (USOTC) and because of Title IX regulations (which forbid discrimination on gender grounds, ed.) he had to hire two female soigneurs. He said they usually didn't last long. They were either sleeping with the riders or they couldn't handle the load. I asked Eddy how much we would get paid and he said, "You work for free." :)

And here, I was like, 敵et this guy out of here. Get him and his crew out of here! Who is this guy? So Moser starts speaking Italian, and motioning to his legs to see if he can get a little shake out. Then Davis came over and told me, 添ou have to work on this guy痴 legs like now! I told him, 的f I get in trouble, it is on you. So I got my start oil and started working on his legs at least his entourage got a break. So that is the story behind that little photo.

What a fantastic read. Thank you!

The part that stands out the most for me is how much she loved the sport, the work, the riders... Just absolutely genuine. More of that in my life, please. :-)
