Hearing Allan Wanta is the best at re-finishing Eddy Merckx framesets.

Would love to hear feedback from Paceliners that have actually had their Eddy Merckx frameset re-finished with a pic.

For the money, maybe the best, and he has done work for me and I have been happy with it. But the best? That is subjective at to best.

Here are a few I would add:

Joe Bell
Keith Anderson
Jason Sanchez
Tom Kellogg

There are more, but these guys come to mind

I had him replace one of the top tube cable guides, and refinish my '80 Merckx. Never again.

Agree with all of those recommendations. Joe Bell and Cycle Art both do great work, and I have frames done by each of them. But Al Wanta has done every Merckx frame I've had repainted- four in all- and each has been simply stunning.

I know that Nesteel was unhappy with the work done for him by Al, can't really add anything to that.

I was very happy with the first refinish go around with Wanta. It was the fact that the paint never fully cured and the second refinish fell well short of the first.

I will say that he's a nice enough guy, and responds to emails very quickly. He did fix the first refinish on his dime.

I'll post first and second round pics in a minute.

First round. I was thrilled with this paint. Color, decal work, infills, all spot on and beautiful.

Second round. While the work is okay, the color is off, decals are different, and lug infills were missed.

I won't even get into the packing job on the second repaint.

I've had three bikes refinished at Southwest Frameworks by David Cheakas. He's not fast but very good. I like that he is also a frame builder so he goes over the frame and can correct issues while the paint is stripped. He did my Big Leg Emma and added a front derailleur tab. He is currently doing my Argonaut and is replacing the cable guides/stops with stainless. I had my MX Leader done by Cycle Classics in Portsmouth, VA. He did a great job although the chroming place over chromed and the entire bike is chrome under the paint. Not like it made it heavy.

did a very nice job on my merckx as well as 2 other frames (colnago, gazelle)...but as has been said there are others that i'd rank among "the best" but they cost a heckuvalot more for their services.

my bikes are riders, not museum pieces, so a wanta-class finish is all i need and i'm very pleased with his work.

Richard Schwinn did my Corsa 01. First thing they did after stripping was onto the frame table to make sure it was straight..NICE..and it wasn't and it broke at the down tube/headtube lug..but that's a different story.

Red with white bubble Merckx decals supplied by me..beautiful job. They also did a Corsa-Molteni..now with 50th group on it. I had to supply decals but nice job.

Right above..Wallyman!! Back to bar wrap school for YOU!!! Forget the pieces around the lever clamps->:D:cool::rolleyes:;)

Nah. Started out as forgetfulness, but these days I do that on purpose anymore and enjoy eliciting such reactions!

Please excuse my ignorance, but (roughly) what might it cost to have a frame resprayed?

I'm a rube. :o

depends on who does the work, the complexity of the design, and the level of finish you want to achieve...anywhere from $250 to comfortably over $1000.
