What's a roadie to do for a little excitement? A holiday break, feeling like the monogamous relationship with the road is getting a little stale, looking for a cheap thrill??

since you can pay for most cheap thrills by the hour, and since my local shop takes credit card...why not??

had a blast over the last few days tearing it up on this thing. i dont know if i "got" it before, but these are fun!! if you can rent them locally, definitely give one a go!

I wanted to try one on the Outer Banks when I was there in the early summer, but, no rentals, unfortunately.

Fat Bikes are all the rage in my crew, mostly hard-core roadies but some MTB-ers as well. Mostly Framed Minnesotas, by coincidence.

At least one MTB rider has sold his full-suspension MTB in favor of a Surly Pugsley.

I've ridden my son's, it felt a lot like a FS MTB to me, at least to my novice set of skills. He purchased it from a top-level local cross racer who has traded indoor training for fat bike riding in the woods of Maine.

Yesterday we had 12 cruising through the woods in a mix of ice, mud, and snow. Our persons and our bikes were an unholy mess when we were done but everyone agreed it was a blast

Could I ask what beach that pic was taken on? I miss the Shore... Surf's up!

Kinda wish I had ridden my fat bike today, mostly because it has studded tires and there is ice at the tops of the mountains now.

for that, you can buy one for $200 at Walmart

After riding my Niner last summer in Moab and Fruita, I won't give up the trad mtb. I ended up adding a Surly ECR last summer to bridge the gap and I'm casually waiting for the right deal on our local CL for a fatbike. Guys around here seem to discard these for peanuts.

This is where I am on the learning curve.
I got one of the Pugsley Ops on sale before Christmas.
All of my prior MTB riding has been on old steel bikes without suspension.
My first couple of rides I was trying to use it like my other MTB's. It just wasn't agile.
It's starting to register in my brain now that with some momentum you just cruise right over and through most of the stuff you picked around on your old MTB.
It's getting fun now.

Yup. With glee I roll over stuff in the road that would bring me down on a road bike. Last ride I ended up going thru a "pot hole" that was the size of a round garbage can cover and a few inches deep- not a problem.

early last year ....i was a naysayer

picked up a Charge Cooker 2 from a friend who upgraded his this fall , & have ridden it in all conditions so far .........Its heavy,a great equalizer at times....but a blast to ride!
rode 30 plus miles on new years day with it in 28 degree weather!
& i'm already in process of building a 616 fab for ····s & giggles....

Nice blue, Angry.

So what does a fat bike handle like? Is it agile and quick? It sure looks like it would be the opposite. Though it does indeed look like fun.

I jumped on the sale. I've ridden this six times in the last couple of weeks. Definitely upped the fun factor.

FYI, "agile and quick" are not two words associated with "fat" bikes, however "BIG FUN" are two words you can use with complete confidence!

Convert to tubeless, enjoy ridiculously low pressures and reduced rolling resistance!

I picked one up a month ago. It is fun and I like being able to ride in any condition. The trainer just isn't cutting it for me. Definitely not agile but I love being able to roll over just about anything. With the brooks saddle and right tire pressure I am still getting out for a hour or two a day. I am just not getting as many miles in but it seems to be a great work out.

but it seems to be a great work out.

ain't this the truth!

i wasn't keeping track of miles, but pedaling through soft sand is a heartbreaker! making any positive headway speed on the beach really drove my heart rate up, huge workout for a little bit of time on these things in certain conditions IMO.

I did 13.5 miles in slushy slop on mixed trails and it took me almost two hours. It was a slow day but fun nonetheless.
