I just bought a set from Soma just for the heck of it. I haven't used clips and straps since 1990!

(I bought clipless pedals at the 1990 Hotter'n Hell Hundred expo the night before the ride, installed them and rode the ride the next morning with them. No way I would try that now. I got lucky and just guessed on cleat position. They worked fine.)

Clips and straps came on the Shimano 105 pedals as part of the group on my first real bike back in 1988. I only rode those for about 3 months. (still have em tho). I got my first pair of Look clipless pedals in the spring of 1989 along with the first ever 'carbon' road shoes I had ever seen. Those shoes were Shimano too, and I also still have them, as well. (The 'carbon' consisted of an approximate 2 inch square imbedded in the sole of an otherwise nylon sole,,, right where the 3-bolt cleat attached on threaded studs that came from INSIDE the sole and tightened with special nuts against the cleat.)

Back in those days, you could prolly get away with just eyeballing the cleat setting on clipless and 'going'. There was no such thing as 'float', but also no such thing as a tightness adjustment on the closure setting of the pedal. You kinda got 'automatic' float because the effort required to unclip was very slight and allowed for a little heel movement whether you wanted it or not.

I still ride a lot in clips and straps, but now almost always with sneakers or Carnac touring shoes, very rarely with slotted cleats any more.

yeah i prefer clips and straps on commuter/around town/beater bikes. nothing like being able to throw on any pair of shoes and ride to work or whatever.

I like them for rides into town when i want to walk around in normal shoes and blend in. that bike also happens to have bags to carry things home from these adventures.

if I am not going to ride clipless I will ride platforms but I really prefer clipless over everything, I just can't go back

Of course. If the bike is from an era where clips and straps were used, that is what is on the bike! For me that means around twenty bikes.
