Searched and searched but my Google-fu is failing me.

Say you have a stock 5800 or 6800 groupset on a bike. Is it possible, and if so, what is entailed with changing out a 50/34 crankset to something like a Sugino 44/28? I know that 10-speed compatibility is there, but does that extended to 11-speed?

In general, shifting systems are separate from cranks and chainrings.

For example, Campy chainrings are compatible with a Shimano FD, and vicey versey.

As long as your front derailleur can accommodate the lower chainline of a 28 tooth ring, it matters little what brand the ring and cranks are.

This is not a problem for bikes with non-tapered seat tubes and clamp-on FDs. But if you have a seat tube that flares towards the BB or if you have a braze-on style FD, then you may run into challenges. If one of these situations is a challenge for you, look into front derailleurs that are designed to be used with a triple.

If you are looking for a cranks/chainring recommendation for low-compact gearing, I always go with White Industries myself.

The only issue is with 11s 'system' and 10s spaced chainrings(not thicker but further apart), you 'may' get some chain to front Der rubbing at the extremes, highest and lowest gear.

The VO 50.4 46/30 crank works fine with 6800 11 speed. It just takes a square taper bottom bracket (the VO BBs are fine...). If you have the space for the cage (it can hit the chainstay on some bikes) the 6800 FD works fine or use a CX70 FD... It all works great with the 6800 chain/brifters etc... Shifts fine...

This is a great question and one I've had in my mind for some time. The larger context is what replaces a mix of Shimano 9-speed MTB and road components on a bike which does double duty as a light tourer. Right now I have 34x32 available as my lowest gear with a compact double crank. Substituting a triple crank and left shifter allows a smaller front ring, but there's nothing comparable I'm aware of for an 11-speed system.

Except maybe for the VO crank.

Generally i like their stuff, but I happen to find that crank as not to my taste!

Thoughts? Thanks.

The other crank in that 46/30 size range is the IRD Defiant Wide Range Compact.

I've not tried that one with 11 speed but have used it with a SRAM X-9 10 speed (and the CX70 FD) setup and it works nicely. The IRD is only rated for 10 speed compatibility, but that is all the VO is rated for and it works fine...

There's also the Stronglight Lexar.

Get a really inexpensive Veloce triple crank. Remove the big ring, connect the middle with track CR bolts..39/30..or get a TA 11s 'middle/small' rings of your choice. 44/28 easy.

That looks like it could be the ticket for me. Is the Sugino worth the extra cost?

Sugino makes the OX901+, 11spd out the box.

Ebay from Alex Cycles Japan, pick your rings and color...

Cranks like stems & bikes should come in more than 3 sizes.

Nice crank but more $(420) than a 5800 group-nearly as much as a 6800 group..
