View Full Version : Titanium love

I know we have lotsa ti love here, but I've just got to say there's nothing like a plain old ti frame for looking beautiful. Patina only makes it better.

I commute on a redline ti cyclocross bike and for a change, I bought a super cheap Raleigh touring frame. I built it up and now I have my bare redline just sitting there, so I took a soapy cloth and gave it a bath. There's something so nice about an unpainted, rustproof, light, level top tubed frame :).

I suspect that the Raleigh won't last long and I will go back to my first love...

Save for the handlebar, this is my idea of the perfect commuter bike. If it were mine, it'd have mustache bars. Other than that this thing looks fantastic.

I must agree. Ti still rules.

Yes, the bar is a new thing. I actually like it, but my guess is that I will switch back to drop bars .

I tried 45mm knobbies in the dropouts and they fit, but not enough clearance. The Iglehwart fork has tons of clearance.

What about the patina you are referring to? I have never noticed this on a Ti bike, and I can't tell from the pic that there is any color change.

I have a Lynskey Helix and have not noticed any oxidation. You have me curious now, dude.

Have you not noticed how the finish get darker with time? I prefer the aged brushed finish as its not as shiny.

Thats a really nice bike btw! and i agree, can't really beat titanium bikes for versatility.

For years, my #1 was a ti LeMond Victoire. Two winters ago I bought a Cervelo R3 to follow the siren song of carbon. It's an amazing bike that loves to be ridden fast, but nine times out of ten I'm still reaching for the LeMond. I need to sell the R3, 'cause I don't ride it enough to justify keeping it...

Looks great with the shiny fenders and black steel fork. The steel probably feels better for commuting too.

What's the gearing setup btw?

Bought my Vamoots here in the classifieds some years ago, and just added an RSL (which I pick up from Marle this coming Tuesday)! Do I like Ti? You bet I do!

[Added] Here's the RSL, which I just picked up from my mechanic today. Hung a collection of 10 spd Record/Chorus parts. 'Scuse the rear light; meant to take a "clean" photo before I put the rear light on!

Just got back into the Ti owner's club.

Going to be the gravel/snow/rain/you name it bike. Truly multi-purpose; can even be a half-way decent road bike from what I've heard.

Had to hang a few parts on it... just because... :D

every day on a ti bike is a good day!
i guess you could remove the word "ti" from that sentence, and it would still be true...

so i guess for me, it's the time after i get off the ti bike -- when i don't feel like i've just been pummeled in a fight -- that's what i love about mine.

Yes, the fork is an Igleheart. It is very elegant looking, esp as a disc fork.

The patina is just the general wear and polishing of the frame from cable rub, grit, etc. mine is a polished frame and it is dulling over time, not to mention a few dings from a previous life as a race bike when it belonged to th previous owner.

Big fan of ti bikes as well. Picked up a lightly used 99 concours and did my first 100 mile ride on it. I love my steel bikes as well but ti is an excellent frame material and I don't mind taking it out in the elements. It is in my top 3 favorite bikes and a keeper. I have a lynskey built litespeed as well but the serotta is just so smooth in comparison that I put it up on ebay. The pic of my concours is from the day I bought it. It now has a green brooks b17 special and bar tape.

This works for me because of the synergy between the

titanium material which makes for the fantastic feel of the frame feedback through the contact points,
the craft and knowledge of Kent Eriksen who designed the geometry to accommodate my fit & position numbers in making a "telepathic" ;) handling bike, and
the custom long 'n' low geometry so I can ride this bike perched atop it like a lump of jello - the legs do the work and everything else is just taggin' along for the ride

my favorite ti bike of ALL time. i love the contact points. i think i've asked this before but do you have any photos of you on the rig?

This is all I have, I don't have action shots riding this bike although I have been photographed many times by tourists in Central Park where I squeeze in the laps, time permitting. The off-tourist season is among the nicest times to ride in CP and works OK for in rebuilding vascularity and what little base I've got because the riding intensity is fairly low. Hot laps in the Park is dangerous, irresponsible and gives cyclists a bad reputation.

BTW, the photo was meant to illustrate that if you setup correctly in fit & position, you can comfortably ride as much drop as you want and need without tearing up your spinal discs in doing so.

How do you like your November wheels? They look great on your rig.

Thanks. Ridden them about 60 miles so far -- they are on loan from a friend while I figure out whether and which 50mm carbon wheels. I like them so far. It's like having a tailwind, and they make a great sound -- additional speed is noticeable the most in rolling terrain, as you sweep from a quick descent to a quick climb -- they seem to carry you another 2-3 seconds. Very stiff, braking much better than I had feared, and comfy. They are reasonably light.

Odd thing is how planted they feel, almost as if there were a very heavy iron ball at the road level rolling within the tire. A very cool feeling. They have a little less snap than my allow wheels and braking is to be thought about, but in general I'm leaning towards them.

Will try a set of demo Enve 4.5 SES next.

A lovely Moots. Sized to the maximum minimalist, almost like packaging for a Formula1 car!

Good for you if you ride that setup! I know I couldn't do it on a stock frame 'cos to go small enough frame-wise to get the bars low enough makes the toptube too short and the seattube too steep. Even before I went to custom-only geometries, I'd been riding 13 and 14 centimeter stems all my life.

With some die cut vinyl letters, you can turn many Ti bikes into Italian bikes. Just add "elli" or and "ci" or maybe "gni" to the end.

"Here's my Mootselli. It's Italian!"
"Nice Sevenelli. It must be Italian."
"Beautiful Mosiacci."
"I love the way my Italian Serottagni rides."
"My Hampstenelli is a real climber."

Yup. The big question is will they feel like twice the wheels, or better enough to cover the delta. Novembers feel great, and the company -- from my interactions and two friends who have them -- seems great. I'm all for the small local business. I just might want the Enves enough.

So very close, it is Litespeed after Lynskey sold it to ABG. They can still make Ti bikes contrary to a lot of popular "opinion". Still, you get two and a half points!

We have a winner

My kind of thread. I've loved ti for ages and had my first ti frame via a used Seven. I moved back to steel for a bit after that, but recently had to return. I love the material, has such a nice feel.

Thanks for the excuse to post a photo of my Hampsten ti GP:) FWIW, the Spec Power saddle didn't do what I wanted it to, so I'm back with a white saddle -- matching curtain and drapes...

That Hampsten is ballers (well, lots of bikes on this thread are). But the attention to detail on the handlebar wrap end tape and the spacers - I applaud you dear, sir.

Thanks! My version of Billy Crystal's Fernando "it is much better to look good than to feel good" is "when you are too fat to climb at least your bikes better look good..." Truth.

Yes. It's AC. They balance the bikes nicely.

Oh, yeah, forgot about this thread, which is what inspired me to pick up a titanium bike. Here she is, more pics in the Custom Bikes thread here (http://forums.thepaceline.net/showthread.php?t=183254). The only change I decided to make is to add a Brooks Cambium C13 saddle, which should arrive today! Will post updated pics to that thread when it's added.

@tuscany: What year is that Merlin Ex? Wondering if it's a Cambridge frame. Looks like the headtube is >1" so I'm not sure.

Very nice.

Looks great partially build up, I'm positively surprised :)

Its actually a 44mm headtube from the extralight series launched in 2013, not sure what year this is tho. These frames went a bit under the radar can't imagine they sold many at all. Believe these were made by form cycles. Really looking forward to trying it out in a week or so. Im bit worried bout the pf bottom bracket tho but hopefully no creaks. Haven't decided if i should install the bb with loctite from the start of try without and hope for the best..
