Hello everyone I am seeking some advice on this frame and what are peoples opinions about price and value on NOS frames? I have been eyeing a NOS 1994 F. Moser Evolution Pro at our small cool bike shop here. The frame is on consignment for $1400 but the shop owner says he may take $1,100. Well yes it is in pristine shape not a blemish on it NOS and rare as I have never seen a F. Moser in the wild and have heard great things about them. But I am thinking maybe $850.00 based on looking at the market for steel frames. So how does one make a reasonable offer on a NOS frame without being way out of line. Supposedly it was originally a $1600.00 frame in 1994 but still for $1400.00 I could have Curtlo build me up a road rocket with True temper S3. I have attached some pictures of the model built up but this is NOT the exact one I am looking at in the shop tell me what you think. 1697912083 16979120841697912085

He'd probably get the $1100. Mosers have a cult like following that is well deserved.

Seems like a lot to me. Have there been any similar sold on Ebay recently? That would be your best gauge of "fair market value."

If that is a good price for that type of bike and that's what you want, (and it fits) go for it. As you noted, there are plenty of more modern steel options also available, but on the other hand, I can understand if if you have your heart set on a Moser.

It is a beautiful bike. If it fits and would make you happy to ride it what's a few hundred bucks one way or the other? As our own DBRK once counseled me: you have an opportunity to buy a one-of-a-kind classic in your size and you are weighing that versus a modern bike that you can always get??? Why?

To chime in, if it excites you and you can pick it up at a price you can live with, you should get it. It's always easier to get a new bike than N(20+ years)OS bike. Even if you don't build it up, it would still be great to hang on a wall and you can share lots of pictures with the folks here who are going to be more excited than non-cycling friends and family.

Will the LBS guy get winced if you offer $850? Why, just talking about a bike frame, negotiation. You start there, he comes down, meet someplace in the middle. The worse that can happen is he says, 'no, that's too low'.

Nice frame and I think in the $1000 range.

Depends on if you want it. Your not going to find another.

You can always find a new bike. Not so with a NOS classic.

$1400 is too high, Mosers are nice but they are not that highly sought after.

Check eBay to see what you can get for $1100 and go from there.

Agree with Ken 100%. If you like it, don't try to squeeze every last cent from the transaction, the hundred bucks or so will fade as the miles pile on.

This sums it up. You can find numerous old steel bikes out there that are very nice. Value depends really on what it's worth to you. Some have way more of a following than others. I've had numerous slx bikes as for some reason I like that tube set. I had a DeBernardi that was as good as any. Typical italian finish, easy to chip but looked cool and it sells for peanuts compared to the more lusted after names.

If it's meaningful to you and you like it do like OP said start low and negotiate a price.

If it makes you smile and doesn't break the budget, go for it!

I had a moser in the late 80's, lusted for it once I saw it in the shop window! Never regretted purchasing.

A bit OT but interesting.
Here is a heavily used Moser team bike from @78.
It was built by Marnati.

1400 is an insane price for the frame... and if the guy can go down to 1100 it is a lot of discount and probably even with that the dude is making at least 400 bucks out of it. I do get it is new and it is in a shop but even at 1100 it is way too much.

Probably the owner wants like 700 bucks for it that is kind'a ok in the high range tho.

Is easy get hot for a bike and pay way too much.

Zero Uno is a good tube set but I can't tell if those tubes are OS. If they are, that would add value for me. I don't think I would pay over $800 unless I was a huge Moser fan or if the tubes were OS. Then maybe I would go up to $1000. Personally, I wouldn't mind having a Curtlo, one of the primary reasons being that he built a custom bike for Inga Benedict for the '92 Olympics.

Hello there well Thank You for all the great reply's that is just what I was looking for and why I enjoy this forum so much. Thanks also to Cneighbor1 for the links as well that is what I have been finding as well prices much lower then this one. On the other hand many great reason as well to not get to hung up on price though I am on a bike budget that I (try) to stick to, does it move me, I can always find new, It is a classic. Oh fivethumbs it is not OS tubing.
Anyway I will do some pondering and thinking over Christmas hey wait a minute Christmas? Humm.
Have a great day and Merry Christmas

Cool to support your LBS, but I'd side with those saying it's too high.

For one thing, it is not "NOS", which means "New" old stock. It has been built up, assume ridden a bit, can see some blems in the photos .., so I'm sure it is excellent, but excellent org condition <> NOS.

I love my steel moser which I snagged here for much less and it is real real nice too. Troll around here and I think you'll find a bigger better deal

Price is certainly too high. Aside from that, I would strongly encourage you to test ride it. I could never get used to the geometry on my Moser.

I have always lusted after a Moser. I still regret not snagging the Moser Leader AX with the proprietary seat post in great condition that went for $300 on the fleabay a few years ago. The tt was a hair too long and I had my doubts, I am an idiot! The list of bikes I missed out on for one reason or another is longer than it should be, it haunts me from time to time.

Nothing wrong with making an offer, just be respectful. There is a small bike shop in my area that has a sweet Moser just like the one you have pictured and it's the apple in the owner's eye, its his personal bike and very special to him, got to admire that. Of course I asked if he would ever part with it, he would not, I totally understand.

Probably a better bike than this Moser frame. "Formicone" means "ant." (No one has archives like my archives!)
