Just wondering what the rarest or most obscure bicycle you have owned or currently own. Mine is a 1981/82 lotus super pro aero. I would love to see what others have with pics preferably.

My whole stable is an eclectic mix of rare. From two custom Softrides made by TiCycles (one road, one track/SS), a Paul Barkley custom Softride... The most "generic" is a Specialized Rockhopper Sport that I've bastardized with a 29er Salsa fork.

The most rare would be the ones I built for myself. Next would be the Javelin X-frame aero bike, circa probably 1990.

Scott Plasma 3 TT, with the fabled -17 Shark-tooth flat stem. Scott made these bikes for only one year before changing the livery and the stem. The stem alone resales for $400 used...

I have one of the most collectible bikes on the planet. It is currently on loan to the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame.

My bike is generally referred to in cycling literature as "Breezer #2. (http://www.bikerumor.com/2014/09/24/ib14-breezer-2-we-interview-joe-breeze-about-the-second-mountain-bike-ever-made/)" "Breezer #1" is in the collection of the Smithsonian.

By comparison, my 1983 Ritchey Annapurna is barely collectible.

Good question. None of them are exceedingly rare, but yet also are not common either.

Tommasini tecno
Yeti arc-x
Singular osprey
Yokota legend (frameset)

None of them are high volume and the tecno is the only one that was in production more than a handful of years.

And thanks for sharing it with the world! I saw that bike when it was still in CB, before the move.

For Hilltopperny, I saw a Lotus super aero in blue locked outside my local food coop when I stopped to pick up something on Monday. Nice bikes, I hadn't seen one in years.

Two Inner Lights (Davis CA builder, Kimo Tanaka) I only see them around Davis.
First is fixed gear fillet brazed bike painted by Ross Pickett
Second is nickel plated breakaway adventure bike--eyelets for racks, 3 bottle bosses
Last the Moser Laser, scandium, just bought back from Netdewt here on the forum

Hmmm, mine aren't really rare.

My Speedvagen is/was one of a kind - it is fillet-brazed. At the time, Sacha said he wouldn't build it that way, then had a change of heart leading up to NAHBS. He built it himself as a show bike, so I guess it's a Vanilla?

I love this bike.

My one and only pair of tubulars (Record 10 silver on Nemesis) were purchased from someone affiliated with Team Vacansoleil who was selling off the team stock, likely as they all transitioned to carbon hoops. I bought them used off a website when living in Switzerland a few years ago.

For now, it is likely my 1980 McLean "Perfect Pleasure."

I waited six years for one of these that fit and it was well worth it.

I have some nice bikes around the house, but this one is a dream ride for me.

I'll post new fotos after a few off season updates....

https://www.flickr.com/photos/36270004@N06/albums/72157654326614029

I'm updating bars, brake levers, saddle, tires and water bottle cages to suit my riding style/preference.

BTW This bike has excellent road manners!

some drainage holes in it, thanks for asking. It actually isn't a saddle, just the fairing. Still trying to figure out how to fit it to the Turbomatic and both to the post. On the other hand, the handlebars have enough volume to hold a couple of diapers.

I'd love to hear the story on how you got this.
I got that lumbar support from Nashbar years ago to go with my 1st generation Turbomatic. Never used it and sold it many years later.

Was it 1994 that Marie rode that in the Tour? I think the bars are called Manta?

embarrasingly simple. Ebay auction from a guy in switzerland with apparently good sources. Was frame only, and not very expensive. Other team Maxisports have been sighted at same place.

Yep, Mantas. The stickers are missing, but these bars are so hard to find i took these. Front wheel needs to be a 4-spoke Corima, too..

The Maxisports was used 1992 - frame # says 1 92. "MT" for "Marie, Thierry"

The rarest bike in my collection is an 89 Specialized Rock Combo. Supposedly on 500 made. Finally found one in 22". It is actually a really great bike. Not expensive or highly sought after but I really enjoy mine. It is currently built as a 26" city cruiser. I have an idea to build a 650b drop bar rig out of it. One day I guess.

Although I have an 89 steel Landshark (61cm) that may be rare, not sure.

Is this one of the original three that Ritchey welded up for Breeze and Fisher?

I have one of the most collectible bikes on the planet. It is currently on loan to the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame.

My bike is generally referred to in cycling literature as "Breezer #2. (http://www.bikerumor.com/2014/09/24/ib14-breezer-2-we-interview-joe-breeze-about-the-second-mountain-bike-ever-made/)" "Breezer #1" is in the collection of the Smithsonian.

By comparison, my 1983 Ritchey Annapurna is barely collectible.

Back around 2003/2004 when Ben Serotta decided to move more into the carbon realm he offered 150 Founder's Edition Bicycles. For an up front payment of $6k you could have Serotta build you any bike in their lineup with any standard available build kit including nearly any choice of wheels. This also included a visit to the factory for a custom fitting, Founder's jersey a very nice hotel stay and dinner with a few folks from the factory as well as a couple cycling icons. (I actually sat beside Ron Keifel at dinner one evening). You could also opt to wait on the release of their newest development......Ottrott. Well me and my pal Serotta Pete took this deal! We both waited for the Ottrott's. I got lucky #13 and I think Pete got #3. I requested that everyone that hand in building my frame sign the top tube for quality control😜. Interesting thing about this deal is only 16 Founder's Edition bikes were sold....one customer ordered 2

This is the only "rare" bike I own. It's a 2013 Specialized Stumpjumper FSR Evo 29er, Troy Lee Edition. The only thing "rare" about this bike is the paint job. 100 of these frame sets were released. It's hard to tell from this photo, but the metal flake paint is super, super sparkly.

Is this one of the original three that Ritchey welded up for Breeze and Fisher?

Your sequence is off. In 1977 I finally talked Joe Breeze into building me a special bike, a fat-tire frame for off-road, but built to the quality of a European race bike like my Colnago. When word got out that Joe was building a bike for me, others got in line, and he took 8 more orders.

Joe kept the first for himself, Breezer #1, now in the Smithsonian. I took delivery of mine in early 1978. Mine is on display at the Marin Museum of Bicycling, where Joe is the curator.

A year later in the spring of 1979 Tom Ritchey built three bikes at Gary's request. His design was influenced by Joe showing Tom the bikes he had built for me and 8 others. Tom had also taken part in a Repack downhill race in January of 1979, his introduction to this new direction in bicycling.

It's all in my book, see tag line.

One of two prototype Klein mtb. Not being a mtb guy nor following it closely all I remember is that the rear suspension as well as the internals of the front shock were prototype. I purchased from a guy I hired directly from Trek/Klein way back in the day, maybe 12yrs ago. Each time I've ridden it around mtb geeks they go crazy over the bike and I have absolutely no idea what they're talking about, then they laugh and say, "typical roadie". Oh well. I know it's cool and that's good enough for me.

I have a Serotta Atlanta Concept that was built for use by the Ukrainian National Team in the Tour DuPont. It's a precursor to the Atlanta model that came out in 1996 I think. Dave Kirk probably built it and the serial number says it's No. 004. Don't know how notable it is, but the particular model is rare and it rides nice. There's a thread on it in the Custom section.

1974 Zeus Professional, I sold it new from the bike shop I worked at, later the gal that bought it decided racing wasn't for her, I bought it from her. It's all original except for the clips and straps, the rims and spokes, and chain. The new rims have never even had tires glued on. Original pump, saddle, 5 speed 14-22 freewheel, Zeus 2000 centerpull brakes etc. Durifort tubing. The cellphone pic was with different wheels after a ride, yes I do occasionally ride it.

Serotta did know how to build a mountain bike. Mine is a model year 2000, and i don't think more than about 200 were ever made. It was built for an 80mm front shock with a pretty aggressive head tube angle (71 degrees?) by today's standards, but i'm running a Reba 90-120 which helps on descents. Since the Stratos rear shock is integral to the frame I picked up a spare, but the original is holding up so far. I haven't been using it on technical trail as much since i got a Remedy (150mm travel), but there are some long front range routes with mixed trail, dirt, gravel that it's just perfect for.

My Aegis Aro Svelte isn't quite obscure yet but it is getting there.

https://farm1.staticflickr.com/610/23251953334_92290d6393_b.jpg

What makes mine more obscure is that I have replacement drop out that allow me to run it with 130 mm vertical drops for gears or 120mm horizontal rear facing drops for a track configuration.

I would love to see pics of your Innerlight. I have a fixed gear Innerlight that I bought from a friend in the East Bay whom it was made for a few years ago. I haven't seen another one yet!

Colnago Master CX

1 of 1 made, as far as I know. Colnago has built only a handful of steel cyclocross bikes over the years, starting with one in the '70s for Roger de Vlaeminck. Luca Bramati raced on lugless steel Colnago 'cross and mountain bikes in the mid '90s.

Bert Hiemstra raced on one in 1998-1999 for Rabobank, also lugless.

Mine is the only lugged Master I've been able to find (and I've done some research and documented it on Wikipedia).

It has no serial number so laura @ colnago was unable to help with any details. I should probably reach out to Alex @ Colnago (on the FB group) to see if he remembers anything about a single yellow bike that was built 15 years ago. Yea, right!

This bike came with Shimano equipment and a painted steel unicrown fork. I did some minor updating. :) It's one of my favorite bikes to ride...fits me amazingly well and is a joy on the trails. I don't race it.

Agree. I had one in college (early 1970s) and it drove me nutz because the rear fork displaced under load and yielded, so when looked at from the rear, the rear wheel tilted. I eventually sold it to my engineering master's thesis advisor, David Gordon Wilson, who had quite a collection.

Ok I'll play.....have posted all of these individually here before, just not in this thread.

I chose each because they're unique and specific in their own way. Ultimately the Cipo and Boonen bikes are probably the rarest given their personal history/status in the sport.

Clockwise from upper left:

Mario Cipollini's custom Bianchi FG Lite. Stamped "MC" in BB shell. Crazy geo that only Mario could dream up: 58cm TT, 16cm HT, 73deg angles front rear and just begs for a 140+ stem to make it fit right. As raced in Doha/Qatar. His only year with Liquigas and have never seen another although I'm sure a couple exist.

Axel Merckx's custom Team SC. Made by the father for the son....and one of the most iconic paint jobs ever. Custom geo for Axel. Only Axel bike I've ever seen in this scheme with the number hanger.

Sean Yates's Merckx MX Leader: Made for Sean but he didn't like the MXL that much and preferred to race on the Litespeed Ti bikes they started using that season. Verified with factory build sheet as 1 of 2 made for him, so still pretty rare.

Tom Boonen's Merckx EMX-5: custom geo for Tom that wound up then being incorporated into a revised standard offering a couple years later (lower HT, longer TT). He only rode this version briefly before switching to the Belgian National Champ color scheme (Tom has offered to sell this one to me as well); this frame was used in Qatar/Oman and then was his home training bike for the season. 1 of 2 known in this color (other is the bike he rode to 2nd at PR behind Cancellara and is a museum in Belgium)

Gregory Rast's Trek Domane Classics - Apparently his backup for Roubaix as it still has the top tube cobble map detailing all the sectors. Unique model, only a handful made for the Leopard Trek PR squad that year. Believed to be 1 of 2, other is at Trek HQ on display as his actual PR bike.

I have Alexi Grewal's and Alex Stieda's Coors Light Serotta Softride beam bikes. Grewal's is built up, Steida's is just a frame. Couldn't find any pics, must be on an old computer.

After sending the Stieda frame to Dave Kirk for repair later in 2020, Dave came to the conclusion that both frames were built for Alexi Grewal. The one he repaired he believes to be the last Coors Light Softride frame built. From another thread on the bikes, it seems that Dave built three of them and Kelly Bedford built one. It's not clear if Grewal had three and Stieda one, each got two, or another team member got one.

CSTRider I really enjoyed seeing the boneshaker!

My own rarest bike likely isn't my Koppenberg, my T0095 serial Stumpjumper, my MiniMax-tube Ciocc, my 24" wheel Hamilton frame or my weight-weenie Speedwell.

Might be my Richard Moon (about 20 bikes ever built), my Boulder Paris-Roubaix, or one of my Polchlopek bikes, or possibly my early-50's E. Christophe road bike(???).
Who knows how many of these bikes were ever built or how many have survived?

Then there's my Racing (Cheltenham-) Pedersen, haven't seen another one like mine, but it has to be considered a modified bike and I know of at least one other still kicking about (that I used to own and kept in the family).

Great thread!

Here for your pleasure is the first of several bikes I'll be posting (as I clean them up).

This is the 1973 Raleigh RRA. Made for one year during the bike boom of the mid '70s.

Features the Simplex Super LJ group set along with a drilled Stronglight crank. Weinmann Brakes, GB Bars, TTT Stem. The original seatpost was lost, so Campy Aero with a Brooks Team Pro.

Since this is a daily rider, it has newer wheels (yes that's 14x18 corncob). I'm going to get the Malliard 700 hubs refinished and hopefully relaced.

This was my dad's racing bike, it was a very long restoration project, and it's quite lovely to have it back on the road.

More to come

Super rare bikes, what is the last one??? never seen anything like it.

That's my Pedersen, a design that's been around since 1893.
It uses a "hammock" style leather saddle of normal size, though suspended between tension springs at the back and an adjustable tension strap to the headstock joining.

Featuring a "Colin Chapman school of design triangulated space frame", having a lower clevis "headset" pivot.

Described to me over my years of racing as "The Flying Machine", "Danish chopper" or "under-fed horse".

One of the first of 90 or so replica Pedersen bicycles built by Individual Cycles of Cheltenham in the 1980's reviving the late 1800's design of Danish inventor Mikael Pedersen.
A super light racing Pedersen was produced at the turn of the last century and broke many records of the day when ridden by Harry 'Goss' Green (with the help of a hand crank on the front wheel!).
Again in the 1930's or so, racing success of riders in England on Pedersens led to them being banned from competition for some years.

Pederson, that's wicky wacky woo. Some very interesting mods and design ideas... I see a J-Tek Shiftmate, some chain used as suspension componentry etc, but I must ask... what is the purpose of the platted cord between the 'down tube' and the 'seat tube'? (ie just below the bottle cage)

Thanks, my riding this bike started out as an experiment, to see how (with training efforts) I could do on it as if it was a modern bike.
I did hillclimbs, criteriums, MTB then settled on CX as my preferred discipline.
So the "platted cord" (made from a leather shoelace) serves as a grab-handle for sailing over the barriers. Photos below showing barrier hops before and after I added the handle. The machine got one of it's nicknames for my style of "flying" or airing the bike out keeping my hands on the grips (1st photo).

The sections of chain are a means of adjusting the length of the "tension strut" cables and thus changing the saddle height. There were parts missing when I bought it sourced from an abandoned storage unit.

Notice also the front brake pad tethers, intended to support braking loads directly, isolated from the pivots for better braking (done out of necessity after my first mtb race in wet conditions).

Thanks, that makes perfect sense.

Yes, I noticed the brake tethers mods. Given the very slim tubing I'll bet that bike 'springs' as only old steel can do. It's one of the things I love about my fixed gear bike (seat stays thinner than a pencil).

Very interesting handlebar/stem!

Is that the size they call "Royal Extra Large"?

Is the saddle setup home-brewed by chance? I've seen similar on a custom-made racing Pedersen out of England, done up as a TT bike with a much-lowered front end.

I went looking for a photo link, didn't find it but found this, Pedersens racing in England in the 1960's (starting at 13:20)

Peter B wrote: "OK. Inquiring minds want to know--does it plane? "

I don't know about planing, but the saddle suspension is bottomless. Successive hits are not taken as well.

It's a hard bike to fall off of, even when the front tire inevitably slides out repeatedly on slippery surfaces. Changes of direction can be immediate, like certain recumbents.

Oddly enough, mine sprints rather well for a 29 pound bike, even with plenty of flex going on:

None of my bikes are exceedingly rare, or expensive, or collectible but I haven't run into another one of these in my area. It's a 1999 Mongoose Pro RX10.9, polished titanium built by TST/Sandvik for Mongoose.

Purchased as NOS. Tube set is known as Columbus EGO, one of their aerodynamic offerings. Chainstays are MAX dimensions. For reference, the cardboard tube in the photos has diameter of 1 inch. Rides nicely but the aero fork crown doesn't make for a stiff fork, so descending can be 'exciting'. Currently residing in Girona...dressed for their annual Temp de Flor festival

Of course not. A Moulton is what happens when you leave a Pedersen in the dryer too long.

Is this what happens when you water a Moulton?

My wife’s fire engine red fierte.

It’s a 46 cm frame with 650b wheels and chorus 10.

It is almost comical how small a bike this is, like a juniors bike, but it fits her. It’s also in pristine condition because she doesn’t ride much, sadly.

I love this little bike.

She was a lot fast than my legs could move her, with lots in reserve. But my aging lower back wanted wider tires, so she wound up with the son of a good friend/neighbor of Peter's. I found a Weigle that fit fatter rubber, took it to French Fender Day last year, and ran into Old Yeller's new owner, and his dad. His dad sold windsurfing boards back in the day, traded a board for one of Peter's early ATBs back in the '80s, and he and Peter cycled and surfed together.

My newer/older Weigle appended below.

In-house obscurities...

'81 Brodeus---I built this at a Proteus frame class in '81, only frame I ever built. Only one in the world! It was not a smooth build, with not a lot of oversight, so I suspect there might be some cold-brazed joints up in there somewhere.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/5396721397_a58d22dcd3_b.jpg

'80 Echelon Spectra---DIN's racier model, blatantly mis-decaled as a Cherubim, which it ain't

https://live.staticflickr.com/3863/14568091716_1783c13a07_b.jpg

The Echelons are some of the cleanest Japanese OE builds I've seen for small US branders.

'14 Specialized Allez 40th Anniv Ldt Ed---DiNucci design, Toyo build. Only 74 were supposedly made, but my serial# is a bit beyond #74, so maybe there were some extras made for warranty or insiders? There's another photo of this with a later build in the neighboring Lugged Steel thread.

I suppose these two are now the rarest I currently own. There are less than 25 Old Kings that have come out of the No22 shop and only a few set up with the carbon Lefty fork. So this is a pretty uncommon bike and a titanium hardtail that you won’t likely see many places.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210114/117cdbcc14d9d74e32820f01a42a83c6.jpg
The other is a CHT Serotta that was built and owned by Frank over at No22. He recently refinished the frame and hung some pretty cool parts on it. This is one of the coolest and nicest frames I have owned. Old school Serotta with Colorado Concept tubing, swaged seat stays, 3D xl dropouts, two tone custom anodized graphics on a bead blasted frame. I don’t know how many of these were produced, but there aren’t any other like this one!https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210114/4b32c08d7beae3d4efcae7fc1769fa8c.jpg

I am nominating this one as rare since I searched for on in my size in good condition for about 35 years off and on....At first glance, it appears like thousands of other Peugeot PY 10 s from the time period. When you look closer, you start to see differences like how nicely the lugs are thinned and finished, drilled rear dropout faces, Reynolds Continental fork blades, great chrome and paint work and other things that were not typical of Peugeot’s from the day. In fact, this is a PRO 10 model which was made in a small shop detached from the Peugeot factory that handled building bikes for the professional team and they were available on a limited basis to the public by special order. This one is from February 1981, so will turn 40 next month. I like to imagine that it was made right after one for Gilbert Duclos LaSalle and right before one made for Phil Anderson.

Don Ferris was a framebuilder before he started the Anvil fixture business, and continued to build a few as that business got rolling. This bike was built in that era, early 2000's. Mix of a number of tubes with the aim of a light steel bike for a small rider. Its around 17 lbs built, despite the fancy buttressed lugs. I has some crazy details, including curved seatstays, my initials brazed on the tt, and a stem made from ovalized aero tubing that required crazy work to reshape the lugs.

I crashed it badly in 2013, denting the downtube. In 2018 I had Spectrum repair it, Jeff brazed in a new dt without shift bosses and Tom did the amazing paint.

Well I guess it's this Wayne Evans bike. He supposed to be in the Denver area. I found a local shop facebook page that mentioned another one of his bikes. I messaged them and they did say he comes in there from time to time.

This was built in the mid 90's for Bob Fourney, a multiple winner of several RAAM's. He had the bike built for one of the Paris Brevet Paris events.

I got the bike from Bob a couple of years ago.

I have what are likely the last 2 Serotta steel frames made. A CSI and CDA that were built after Serotta went out of business. A good friend, Serotta Pete, now deceased, helped me procure all the needed material and then convinced Kelly Bedford (master Serotta builder) to construct them.

They are Serotta badged and Bedford signed. Pretty rare and definitely wonderful. I think there are some pics posted under a thread titled Serottaford.

My runner up would most likely be this Lemond. Yeah, I know, plenty of Lemonds around. But this is one a handful made by the man himself to give to some industry friends/associates.

The guys he gave them too. Mine belonged to Tim Swift, fourth over from Greg in this pic.

Greg on a production Lemond and the guys on their Gentleman's Poodle and Grouse Society bikes. The guy in long blue sleeves is riding the one I have.

Thats pretty interesting, so what's the story behind it? How did you get a hold of it? Did Cipollini do much track racing or was this more of a TT frame?

I have a Bianchi Lepre Mini Velo in my collection, it's not really that rare or special except it's normally only sold in Japan but i got it from a forum pal here who brought it back to the US plus it has a cute "miniature horse" geometry :D

i purchased the cannondale from the track team manager at kissena sports in new york, had been ridden by one of their riders and was put up for sale at the end of the 2006/7 track season. it along with it's rider ! took silver at the us track nationals, according to the guy, at some point during it's time there.

unsure where they got the frame, but has been with me for 14 years as a commuter, a polo bike and a long distance fixed bike. think i did 140 miles in a day on it once.

i've never seen photos with cipo riding it on or off the track sadly, it was allegedly built for him to ride the 2000 olympics again according to the classified ad from kissena.

it's quite rare to see such a limited run by a big mainstream manufacturer, maybe there are a few others out there in non internet savvy hands ! would like some info from cannondale regarding this and it's siblings for provenance purposes.

I got this from a forum pal, rode it for a while and then kept it around in a suitcase for several years hoping that I might travel with it one day but never did because I already got 2 or 3 other travel bikes, finally passed it on to another forum pal.

At one point, I got two Bike Fridays, another one is a tikit, a great versatile foldable bike that I kept in the back of my car all the time and took it out to ride at the spur of the moment, sold it for what I paid for after two years of constant use, held its value very well, oh gosh i missed that bike!

Wow, some really great stuff here.

I'll post some pics of my 1978 Serotta Club Special. Sat in a barn for 40 years... just a few hundred miles on it. All original Nuovo Record group.

In the meantime, here are some odd / rare bits here. I'll be posting my Mario Confente designed, Medici lug set soon, too.

Rare enough since there weren't that many road bikes made for the team that year is my 2000 season GT Lotto team bike.

This is a Rivendell prototype for their Joe Appaloosa model. One of a kind. It’s rat bike style, but that’s part of why I love it. Those wildly long chainstays make for a Cadillac smooth ride that surprises me every time I ride it. Fun bike.

I'm not sure it qualifies as "rare"--but you don't see one every day--my repainted 1971 Falcon San Remo team replica (UK)--lost the powder blue in a repair, but I have had this since new... Bought almost this time of year 50 years ago (!) to go racing.

Well, I did 30 miles on this yesterday and realized that I'll probably never see the like. Not that I'm biased but this is one of the sweetest looking Paletti's I've seen digging around online. In fact I haven't found another painted up like it.

Beautiful craftsmen ship in my book although not as perfect as a lot of the work David Kirk shares with us.

https://pbase.com/jhuddle/image/169339012.jpg

https://pbase.com/jhuddle/image/169339010.jpg

And speaking of David Kirk. I got one hands on one of the two frames he built for a short-lived bike company called Fishlips out of Salt Lake City.

One of the first shots of it, got it as a frameset with just the brakes and handlebars.

https://pbase.com/jhuddle/image/171286060.jpg

And how it's built up now, removed most of the Fishlips decals to let David's work shine through. Paint on this was done at Dave Kindig's shop back many, many years ago. This will be my ride today.

oliver1850

It's a 57 cm by the serial number. I'm wondering if I had the seat height right for me in the photo as I'd normally have a lot more post showing on a 57 Serotta.

Fair point, head tube seems to suggest that too, but why not measure it carefully for geometry? They had to build a frame to fit suspension components in somehow. I would not be surprised if it were quite a 'tall' 57.

I got my hand on one of the normal Softrides last year. Still deciding if I'm going to sort it out and keep it or send it on to another rider. It was way more bouncy at first than my Y-Foil but one I smoothed out my spin the thing took off.

that should be correct.the coors light team used those welded aluminum 1" quill syncros stems for a year or two after the cinelli stuff.i used one when i built up my coors light team replica in 94'.
sold the frameset but still have that stem somewhere.i think they had some recalls on a number of those as well.

edit:i just saw the pic of the softride serotta, guess you already have a polished syncros.all the team bikes i saw had the painted black version

Sounds right. I think there were different stiffness beams available. I know that one of mine has a sticker that says that the maximum rider weight for road is 240 lbs. I don't know what Alexi's racing weight was but I'd guess nowhere near the limit. I'm about 160 and can notice the give, but it's not bouncy.

I have been told that at one point the team used another stem with Syncros logos applied. Recall would explain that.

The team bike that I bought complete has a black stem, but I don't know that it is original. Bike seems right though, all Record and the rims are hand labelled "Coors Light" - as if they had spent time in a wheel pit. I didn't have another black Syncros when I built the 2nd bike, so used the polished one.
