My father-in-law was the 4th biker in this group, and luckily, he was in front of the others, or he'd be in the hospital, too.

This is hitting way too close to home. I'm sticking to mountain biking.

Oh man I'm so sorry. I'm always sad to hear about these incidents, but for it to be a loved one that close to getting hit is so stressful.

We also had a hit and run in Carlsbad this week on a road I'm on almost every day where a lot of people drive too fast and pay too little attention.

Both of my parents have had serious addiction problems and have habitually driven impaired off and on over the years. So I have some issues in this area.

That being said

I hate all people who drive impaired, drunk, high, texting, etc.

They are selfishly risking the lives of other drivers, pedestrians and cyclists and deserve much worse than they get, charged with murder at the very least.

I cannot in polite company express my real opinions about what should happen to these foul creatures.

DUI at 10:30 in the morning?? This is not your garden variety "oops, had one too many at happy hour" type drinker.

I'm glad it appears no one was seriously injured. I hope for quick and full recoveries, both physical and mental, for all affected.

Speaking of texting while driving, I think it's one of the most dangerous thing a driver could do, yet it's very prevalent. The only way to stop that is some heavy fine and deduction of points.

Comparing my state of Virginia with, say, Ontario, Canada: in Ontario, Canada, if you get a ticket for texting, you can expect to pay $500 fine and 3 points deduction, and more often than not, a charge of "careless driving" to go with it which will skyrocket your insurance. For beginner drivers, a texting ticket will immediately suspend their license for 30, 90, or forever if they get caught for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd time. In Virginia, if you get caught, the most you get is a $125 ticket, and most of the times, you could even get away with that.

Why is our traffic law so lax about texting? I just don't understand that. Everyone knows it's very very dangerous, yet, no ones wants to do anything common sensical about it.

I had friends initially report about this and seeing a BWR jersey and a Pinnarello next to the ambulance. What else do you know about this?

No, make the cell phone not work when the car is moving. If people in the car with you, OMG, they will have to relearn how to talk to each other(horrors!!).

BUT too many bribes being paid to congress by the telecommunications industry for this to ever happen.

He has a broken rib from where the side mirror hit him. He also has a shoulder injury and will see an orthopedic specialist to determine the extent of damage. It sounds like the side mirror came off from the impact.
