found this cute little app that helps if you don't have caps lock, num lock, or scroll lock lights on your keyboard...or maybe even if you do. Install small window on your screen and makes a beep when you turn them on or off.

Unnecessary: my keyboard (das Keyboard) has this nifty blue arrow above the numeric keypad that comes on when caps lock is on.

What's a caps lock?

hmmm... can't even be a wise guy as it won't let me write in all caps. ;)

The standard Windows keyboard layout can be viewed as a difficult, nonsensical keyboard layout by anyone who has used any operating system other than Windows. In my case as a Unix workstation user on Suns going back many years and even as a Bloomberg user - which has a proprietary keyboard but at least without that confounded Caps-Lock key getting in the way of everything.

Who the heck uses Caps-Lock? Isn't that a throwback to accommodating data entry into mainframes which took input stuff in uppercase only? Whatta PITA, having the Caps-Lock where the Control key rightfully belongs.

I've always used Sun Type 5 keyboards adapted into my home linux computer but have finally worn it out. I bought one of these: KUL ES-87 Tenkeyless Keyboard (http://elitekeyboards.com/products.php?sub=keyed_up_labs,tenkeyless&pid=es87u_cf_bbb_al) Sure, I can change the keboard mapping in linux to reverse the Caps-Lock with the Control key (also Backspace swapped with Backslash) but I can't find the replacement keys with the right labels. So I bought this one where you can change keys around.

I am not even a computer guy. But I've used workstations for decades and I refuse to change. Kinda like using Campagnolo. Dang, maybe you'd think nobody could write 4 paragraphs on computer keyboards and character placement. But I aim to go to senseless levels of minutia where no other person has the good sense to go. Gotta be nuts.

You interact a lot with the keyboard, and it makes perfect sense to get one that really suits you. For me, the dasKeyboard has what I want: a mechanical keyboard with clicking keys that feel just like the original AT keyboard. Works great with a linux workstation. http://www.daskeyboard.com/
