So, who on the team has been using the new Tiagra 4700 10 speed stuff? What do you think of the shifters? Do they shift as smoothly as 6600 or 7800?

With these crazy deals going on, I was thinking about picking up a set of the shifters (I like the shape and lack of external cables) and combining them with some older 7800 parts on a project bike.

TIA!

Just get'em then give us a review. My guess is they will be good to go and the price is right.

$130 for levers or $265 for the whole shee-bang, group..get the group and sell the stuff not needed. $135 for crank/BB/brakes/cogset/chain/ders..yikes!!

I'm running 4700 Tiagra on a CAAD8. Works well enough for 90% of riding, and if taken care of it'll take some abuse. It's great for a bad weather or beater bike, I just wouldn't recommend it for your primary ride

Nevermind, I'm being dumb, I'm running 4600... Got confused between tiagra and 105/ultegra X800 groups. The new Tiagra looks like a better setup than the 4600, closer to the old 10spd 105

It gets to require a lot of adjustments with heavy use and doesn't stand up to tons of miles like a 105 or ultegra would. After a year of riding 3-6x a week, even with normal maintenance, I'm adjusting my shifting after nearly every ride to keep it in line. Brakes are also a noticeable downgrade, but they are an easy swap for something better

If you'll be riding the bike a lot you'll be better served going with 105 or up.

I haven't had much trouble with my Tiagra 4600, 4700 should be better of course.

Mine had a lot of weird initial issues with needing more frequent adjustment.. it went away the first time I replaced the cables & housing (myself). My guess is bikes with Tiagra get cheaper cables & housing and less attention in assembly than bikes built with higher end components. The shop I bought my bike from wasn't really a high end/racing type shop and they totally didn't get it, their tolerances for "tuned correctly" was vastly looser than mine so no surprise the bike wasn't working tip-top out of the box.

I hate the front shifter, it seems like it requires a lot of effort to upshift from the small ring to big ring compared to older 105/Ultegra/DA. (I have a 50/34 Tiagra crankset) It also often takes 2 full swings to do the upshift, noticeably slower than better groups. If I adjust it very carefully I can seem to get a better upshift but it causes the lever effort to go up, and it quickly comes slightly out of adjustment again causing it to take more effort to upshift again. If all the Shimano groups shifted the front derailleur like 4600 I would be going Di2 or Campy. Basically front shifter bad enough to almost get you dropped it can take so long to upshift. (Downshifts fine)

Rear shifting is totally fine. No problem shifting even while standing climbing for me, although again not until I had redone the cables/housing.

I have the Tiagra 4600 flat bar shifters too, and interestingly they shift better than the brifters.

I hate the old school 10sp hood shape of 4600/5600/6600.. can't wait to get on something else, the 4700 has the new ergonomics, IMO vastly superior.

Just installed the 4700 levers with a Sunrace 11-32 cassette and RD-RX400 rear derailleur.

I find going from 11 to 12 to 13 is inconsistent. Fine one time then next I need to give a bit of extra tension on the levers despite hearing and feeling the lever click.
Going from 13 to 12 to 11 isn't as bad but not perfectly smooth. All other cogs shift perfectly.

I believe 4700 has a different pull ratio than 4600 (like 11 speed), but I could be wrong.

A good friend commutes on 4700 and rides weekends on R7000 on very similar bikes. The Tiagra bike probably gets twice as many miles overall. Other than being a little heavier, he said they ergonomics and shifting feel the same. What he did note is that the 105 bike has eaten two rear derailleur cables (the thing where they break about an inch from the head, inside the STI lever) whereas the Tiagra mysteriously has had no such problems.

I have a friend on them. Work about same as higher level on his other bikes. On his....some of the finish on levers wore off from constant sweat, but otherwise...see no reason not to use them. Lots of bikes that are designed to be used for long distance trouble free touring use them.

It isn't compatible with older 10 speed groups it uses 11 speed spacing, they just removed a click. See conversation here: https://forum.bikeradar.com/discussion/13099850/shimano-tiagra-4700-compatibility-issues

4700 levers are compatible with the RD-RX400 rear derailleur.
I confirmed with Shimano.

Had the group on my Charge gravel bike, my first foray with contemporary Shimano parts. Shifts like butter, and kept adjustments. Great value!

I’ve read that 4700 is a dead-end groupset. Not really compatible with anything. It would be better to just upgrade the group to 11 speed (shifters, f/r derailleurs, cassette) or stick with what you have.

Wow! I asked about this over 4 years ago. ;) Thanks for this link! It pretty much sums up the lack of backward capability of the groupset with 10 or 9 speed groupsets.

Thanks!
