I took my son to the LBS with me on Saturday to drop off a wheel. He wanted to go look at the bikes so we poked around the mountain bikes for a while so he could compare them to his Trek he got last year.

I thought he was ready to go but he asked to go look at the road bikes, which he has never been interested in. We put him on a few small frames and I could tell he was getting more interested, esp. when the LBS guy told him he could go much faster on a road bike than mtb. That got his motor going.

I told him that when he got bigger that I'd build up the MX Leader I have boxed in the attic for him. That fired him up big time and he asked me to pull it down so he could look at it. He liked it.

Yesterday at lunch, straight out of the blue, he told his grandmother "Dad has an awesome road bike for me in the attic that I'll get in a few years when I'm big enough."

Congrats! I, too, would like to start mine young. I have a couple bikes waiting for when he's a little bigger, starting with the 20" Viner :D

Nice!

I could probably find an inexpensive 105 or Athena group that could be moved up through a few different frames as he grows.

Pretty cool.

My Wife and I have had a great summer getting our 4 and 7 year old boys into racing BMX.

We bought our 7 year a new bike (20" wheeled mini BMX) for his Birthday in January hoping he would like to race since I did from 4th grade until 9th grade.

Well we just let it take it's own path and by the time the snow was starting to clear he started asking if we could go to the BMX track. Once things cleared up we headed out a couple times to ride the track and he asked if we could go check out a race. I didn't want to push it since I have been racing for years (BMX to MTB and Motocross) and have been thinking of getting him into it without getting too pushy.

Well both the boys did their first race the last weekend of June and we have been hooked since. Landen our 7 year old clipped off 10 wins in 14 races in 7 Novice and moved to Intermediate and Holden our 4 year old is starting to hold down 2nd and 3rd consistently now we have bought him a micro mini 18" wheels (he had a 16'" wheeled Hot Rock but could not keep up with the others) in the 5 and under Novice class. He is one of the smaller guys so it's cool to see him mix it up with the older kids. We have even done some indorr races the last coulpe weeknds. :D

We are planning on doing more races next year with a few nationals mixed in.

They also play Soccer so if they plan on racing more next year we'll have to talk about taking Soccer off for the summer.

Lot's of fun watching the kids, isn't it?!?! My 6 year old started racing this summer as well. He's a really active kid, so he can only get out to the track once every week or two. But he loves it!

I also get him out on the trails once or twice a week. He'll put in 5 or 6 miles at a time for now.

I reccomend removing the kickstand from that cannondale. I've got early memories of a kickstand related spill on a hotrock. I was on a trail with my parents. I don't rember the details, but I went down and the result was a bent kickstand and cranks that wouldn't make a full rotation. I am assuming I got some air and landed on an open kickstand. It bent/turned around and jambed the crankset. I also bent several rear axles on that bike :)

I had not considered anything like that. Thanks for the advice! Will do.

My dad had not consider it either. I learned the hard way :)

It was probably a freak accident, but throwing the kickstand away and learning how to properly "park" a bike felt like a milestone.
