Just wondering if a 27 tire on a roughly 23mm exterior rim will fit in a Look 585...

Looking at the Challenge PR 27s in the classifieds, don't know if they'll clear the frame, on my new wheels (being built presently!)

I'm guessing "no", but would be pleasantly surprised (perhaps so too would the Challenge PR seller) with a "yes"!

Unlikely...A 25mm Vittoria CX tub gets very close to ST, IME.

A 27mm nominal tire would likely fit. The Challenge PR 27s are probably closer to 29mm in reality.

The tires on the bike below are 25mm Vittoria Rubino Pros, measure 26.5mm on 23mm rims.

I rode Vittoria Pave 27 tubulars on Belgium rims without a problem.

Vittoria Pave 27mm clinchers on Open Pro rims fit, but no way for Challenge PR, they are more like 30mm.

Agree. Likely won't work. I had an XL Look 585 that'd fit Vittoria Pave 27mm okay. I also have those Challenge tires and they do fit closer to a fat 30mm. I can barely stuff them in an ENVE 2.0 with Chorus brakes.

a4 pal, pave 27 is the way to go if you are thinking what you are thinking.

When will I realize that the PL will ALWAYS have a great answer to my questions, no matter how esoteric? I love this place.

Thanks all!

I have Conti Grand Prix 4 Season 25s on Open Pro rims on my 585. There ain't much wiggle room between the tread and seat tube.

I have a 585 riding 23mm rims with 25c tires. A true 27c tire would fit no prob. However, as others have said, the PR is larger than 27c. I've used them before (on another bike) and on 23mm rim they were about 30c. I didn't try them on the 585, but it would've been tight, if they fit at all.

I need to check this.... Someone PM me in the next week or so when I'm home and I'll look. I'll post pics.

I have a new-to-me 585 (having been a 585 owner in the past...) and I also have a new set of Pacenti SL23 V2 rims with 25mm Vittoria tires that pump up to over 28mm. I'm curious myself if these will work. But I won't be home for a while because of work and I'll undoubtedly forget to check.

Challenge makes 25mm open tubular tires that would fit.

There's nothing special about the Parigi Roubaix. The casing is nice but their tread compound is dated. If I wanted to roll on a nice open tubular I'd ride a Zipp Tangente Speed or S Works Turbo Cotton. With latex tubes of course.

I say this as a guy who uses the Parigi Roubaix and has a stack of four extras in the closet.

I also like the PR. I've ridden Schwalbe Ones, 28c on a 23mm rim, on a 585 with no problem.

FYI, Conti 28c's run 26mm on an Open Pro.

c is a rim designation, not a unit of measure. Tire diameter is measured in mm.

OK boys and girls, here's my answer.

This is my new-to-me used Look 585. I've owned three others in the past and was foolish to sell two of them. This one stays.

Anyway, I finally have over 48 hours at my apartment/bike storage place and threw in the newly built up Pacenti SL23 V2 wheels. I had a set of Record hubs sitting around and had Dustin of Southern Wheelworks throw them together.

These have Vittoria Open CX 25mm tires installed and they balloon out to 28+mm measured by my calipers. No joke. Of course, the tire itself doesn't change but the rim definitely widens it. Whether or not it's always worthwhile is another question but there's no doubt they are wider and can run lower pressure. I feel totally comfortable running these in the 70s or lower 80s.

There's not much room to spare at the seat tube or chainstays but they do clear them both. Same with the brakes. The mud is from a ride on my Zanconato last week when we had to cut across a couple hundred feet of wet, muddy grass.

I wouldn't go wider than this. I doubt it would work. Anyway, using wider rims with normal tires widens the tire contact patch but doesn't increase the height of the tire and should actually decrease it somewhat.

This is about all you can get with this frame. The front brake has slightly more room than the rear brake, which is pictured.

The bottom picture is of the wheel installed in the Zanconato. It's the exact same rim and tire as pictured in the Look 585.

I sold my 585 to scrub pal a while ago, but I still have my LOOK KG281. Here's what it looks like with CG Pave 27.

This question is a little like, can I tow my boat behind my Jaguar XKE? 585's are road racing bikes. Throw on 700x25 tires and you're good to go.

Crappier roads call for something other than that bike.

This is 100% true. I only put mine in there to see what would work. I'm not actually a fan of big tires for 99.9% of my riding. I'm totally happy with the traditional 22mm Veloflex tubulars.

The 585 is a fine frame for crappy roads. :D

(Thor Hushovd at Flanders agrees)

Me on most any road here in Oakland agrees, too. :D
