I too love the look and stiffness of mono-stay frames, here's are a couple I've owned over the years:

2003 Klein Q-Carbon
http://www.pedalroom.com/p/klein-q-carbon-2003-12307_5.jpg

This was mine a couple of years ago, now a friend owns it and he rides the snot out of it. A real climbing machine, he's running tubeless tires which help the otherwise harsh ride.

For symmetry you need to pair monostay frame with a unicrown fork.

A pushmi-pullyu bike!

I have a few monostays. Aesthetically they've never really done much for me.

I notice the Tange catalog saying this design is supposed to have better shock absorption AND a stiffer rear triangle. Most people in this thread seem to think they're harsher.

I've seen plenty of marketing copy this year talking about maximizing the length of the stays, etc.. and/or joining them to the TT instead of the seat tube, etc.. for better ride quality.

Which is it? I've had bikes with both designs that were comfy and awful.

Have to agree. My Look 585 and Serotta Fierte iT both have them. Still like the look of dual seatstays much better than monostays.

The C50 style higher up on this page looks pretty sharp, though.

Let me guess. Monostays are ...
- lighter
- stiffer
- aero
- more compliant
- they plane!

Seriously, other than aesthetics, are there any non-controversial benefits to monostays (all else being the same, such as tube diameter)?

My custom build "monostay" bike from 1983.

I had a job with a framebuilder during my early racing days building high end Fisher Mt. Bikes. During my off time I built myself a couple racing bikes. This is my TT/pursuit bike I made out of Ishiwata 015 tubing (the lightest steel tube set available then). The Top Tube is so thin you can squeeze it with your fingers and see it flex! .3 mm I think in the center. A little scary really! I painted it Fisher tri-fade as thought it cool at the time.

Made with the tricks I knew back then. Sloping top tube, mono tube rear and a fork blade built to the steerer with no cast crown. Fillet brazed the whole bike as I was doing the same with Mt. Bikes. Notice the Wolber Profil 18 "aero" rims, and 150 Gram cycle pro tires! 18mm wide (they still hold air!). Also I built it with rear zeus track dropouts only adding a derailleur hanger for street. I always wanted a De Rosa bike and thought the heart a nice touch.

I had Modolo Kronos brakes on it BITD but sold them not long ago for some $$$$. It still has the funky plastic pedals I think offered by Stronglight for a year or two. Also Plastic toe clips and nylon straps. Cinelli Domino stem and cut down bars as nothing else was available yet. Galli cranks, hubs etc.

I built it as light as I could make it. It weighs 15.5 lbs which for the time was pretty good! I suppose if I fitted modern equipment I could take some more weight off.

Ciao, Frank

What is this? The carbon wishbone is one piece with the aluminum top, no transitions material to material, just looks like one piece, even the frame looks like a monocoque carbon frame.
