Trying to get some feedback on how these two frames differ in ride characteristics. Would appreciate hearing from anyone who's ridden both of them. Or at least ridden the Merckx.

Thanks.

I owned a Team SC (still do, but it's not ridable anymore due to damage suffered when I was rear ended with it on a trunk rack. It'll make nice wall art). What do you want to know? I loved it. Plenty stiff, cornered well (I liked the slightly slacker head angle on the size 60), the fork sucks so it should be replaced basically as soon as you get the bike. I was using a Dedacciai fork and it was a nice match.

I've owned both and I believe you bought my blue and white 585. Between the two, if I could have either one back it would be the Look. I don't think the 585 gives up anything to the Merckx in terms of stiffness, yet has a smoother ride. The Merckx has slightly more relaxed angles, and I think because of this the Look was a better fit for my contact points.
As a side note I think the Bianchi Infinito is a good interpretation of what an updated 585 would be.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. I did buy your 585 Origin, PA, and ended up selling it in favor of a 585 Optimum, as it fit me a bit better. Those are great bikes.

There's been a Team SC in my size for sale that got me thinking, but you've convinced me to stay put. Have to say, the SC has always been one of my "would love to try one of those" bikes, but I think perhaps its time has passed.

How often does this site end up convincing someone NOT to buy a bike? Not often, I bet! ;)

Cheers.

The 585 has a lot smoother rider quality, not to say that the Merckx is not smooth as it is nice as well being a metal type frame. They both handle pretty differently so really got to figure which geometry suits you more for the riding you'll be doing.

Team SC's are usually cheap these days. If you're curious, why wouldn't you try it out? I don't know the roads in eastern Vermont very well but if you have the kind of dirt roads I know exist near the national forest, you might be pleased with how incredibly well the Merckx tracks over rough terrain.

I've got a Team SC in 56cm. It's been a great bike for the 7 years I've had it. I read a review once that spoke of Merckx designing the frame so it doesn't get in the way of the rider. There isn't any one thing that stands out when I ride it, it does everything I ask. Super stable but it changes direction without effort. There is enough room to fit 25 mm tires.

ENO hub with fixed 42-16 gearing. It's a fun ride.
