My wife and some friends and I are going camping in Acadia National Park this weekend. None of us have ever been, and are open to suggestions as to what we should do. Any recommendations? Anything not to be missed?

We don't have room to take bikes to ride the carriage roads, so we're limited to hiking boots. I also may take along a 5 wt. flyrod.

thanks!

This book should point you in the right direction. Any outdoor store in the area should have it.

I've been there many, MANY times!

Bar Harbor Campground (409 State highway 3, Bar Harbor, 207-288-5185, http://barharborcamping.com/ ) is great. They don't accept reservations, but there are almost always planty of spaces. The bus to town and around the island stops there, too. There is also a good cheap motel across the street (Robbins? Motel) if it rains every day and you wimp out.

Avoid the national park campgrounds (Blackwoods and Seawall) if you can. No showers, pit toilets, and it's as if the planners delberately put them where there would be the MOST mosquitoes.

The Bar Harbor Bike Shop in town rents both MTB's and road bikes, though the road bike selection is limited. Decent prices and it pays to make reservations.

PM me if you like and let's get together on the phone. I've been there many times and can tell you some SECRET places the tourists don't know about!

The hiking is fabulous. I love the South ridge of Cadillac Mountain, and I got engaged on top of Champlain Mountain this April!

Whatever you do, make sure to pick up a couple 22's of Bar Harbor Brewing's Cadillac Mt. Stout. Its one of the finest stouts made, and I'm not just saying that. It really is.
