Here is a short artsy video of the Italian event this year. Captures the true spirit of it. You are there! This would have been a year to remember.

I wonder while looking at this video , is it the end of an ERA Those older bicycle riders will be gone in a few more years and their bicycle sitting some place unused. End of an ERA?

Thanks for the link.

Why would this be the end? What is preventing you from riding the old bikes, or me, or anyone? Not a damn thing.

I WAS there and I can tell you there was nothing artsy about the 209K route.

Oh, I'm sure there's a whole unborn generation of hipsters to carry that flag into the future.

I want to do that thing just for the food stops. Not the long version, though. I want to have fun.

And this is something a little different I posted elsewhere.

"I rode the 208K this year on a vintage Marnati. 52-42 X 14-30. You can use a NR DR with a 30 cog on these older bikes since the long dropout allows you to move the wheel back. I'd change it out to a triple if I did it again since right after Asciano there is a long @20% climb on mud/dirt with the best line clogged with people walking their bikes but I am almost 60 and certainly there were stronger men than I who climbed it on higher gears. The older frames also handle wide tires. I used Compass 32mm which worked well. You need a GOOD light. The first 60km are in the dark and you are going down steep dirt at speed. I took the bike in a Pikaworks bike bag which worked well.

The 208K was a bear. It rained in the AM so much of it involved climbing and descending on mud (@13,000 feet of it). The bike took an awful beating. Only about 200-300 riders (I'd guess) did the long route and these guys were serious riders. The ride is too long and hard to dwadle along soaking up the scenery........you are going to be working while doing it. You'll presumably have plenty of other days in Tuscany to enjoy the riding/roads...and enjoy them you will. Nobody seemed competitive, it is more of an "each man test himself" type thing. If doing the long ride don't go overboard on hoping to show up with the nicest beautiful vintage bike. I wish I'd used something rougher. Nobody else on the long route will care or notice (the shorter routes, however, are more about the bike/costumes/food/wine etc). "

This thread on BF has a lot more about this year's ride. The post by Bikegeek1968 on the third page is particularly interesting.
