An independent commission of the World Anti-Doping Agency has found that Russia engaged in state-sponsored doping and recommended that Russia’s track and field athletes be suspended from Olympic competition in 2016.
The move would be among the most drastic taken against a national sports federation. According to a report released Monday, Russia took part in a systemic, and state-sponsored doping program for several years, including in the run-up to the Sochi Games.
The commission’s investigation was focused on track and field, but its findings on the corruption of Russia’s antidoping organization and its Ministry of Sport suggested that other sports were involved.
“The IC has found that not only was leadership in the fight against doping in sport lacking, but also that there were organized efforts on the part of many senior coaches and officials, inside and outside Russia, to promote doping and make it possible for such efforts to be successful, including the coverup of certain positive cases of doping,”...

Considering that the old SU was the epicenter of state run PED efforts is anyone surprised? Add in a 'win at any cost' political regime now & Russia=corruption.

Eastern Europe, particularly East Germany, began the game in the 1980s, with the greatest success among women's track and field. Check out how many records stand after 30+ years. But to be fair, the US had Flo Jo.

An Eastern European country actively involved in widespread doping in order to increase its athlete's medal haul? Color me not in the least bit surprised.

track and field is where the money is for some reason that I fail to understand, and they had effective doping regimes before cycling. I find it very unlikely that any of the olympic sports that are more strenuous than curling have avoided systematic doping.

That team is a joke. All 5 of them over the last 4 years have got consistently bigger, and pretty much all uniformly bigger.

Every season they come back bigger than the last year, but hey .... No one dopes in curling, right?

While I personally don't quite get the attraction for curling, which I understand is a huge deal to a lot of people, it's hard to believe that there is any human endeavor in which people won't try anything that will make them better.
