I can't seem to find a part number on some Dura Ace downtube shifters. Anyone know how to tell if they are 7 or 8 speed?

Dunno about markings because I never used DA DT shifters. I only used 105 7-speed or '600' 7-speed. However, I'd just dummy-mount the rear der. shifter up with no wire, take it out of friction mode and count the clicks. 8-speed will have 7 clicks, top to bottom; 7-speed will have six clicks.

Nah, have to use old Simplex's for that :)
I don't have a bare frame lying around to simply mount and check as was suggested. Was hoping to be able to visually confirm.

If memory serves, there should be a little 7s or 8s on the RH black cover underneath the d ring that changes it from friction to index BUT..put them on a bike, click..6 clicks-7s, 7 clicks-8s.

Look on the inside edge of the rear lever for a part number. I know 7402 (8 speed) were stamped "SL-7402". Since there was a 6 speed 7400 lever, I'd guess that the 7401 (7 speed) levers are also stamped.
