View Full Version : Fenders and disc brakes: anyone done it?

Putting some SKS Longboard fenders on the 'ol steed and having complications. The rear has a CS mounted caliper, so no issues there, but the front has to be modified on the caliper side, which is a BB7.

It seems that there are two options: bend the stays around the caliper or put a giant spacer to move them outboard of the caliper.

Spacing seems much easier, but the hardware stores here are pretty pitiful and I couldn't find a bolt over 30mm, which isn't quite long enough. Couldn't find the spacer either, for that matter, but could get away without it I guess.

Bending seems more difficult, but maybe it's not as bad as I'm thinking.

Anybody done this? How did you do it?

I've got discs and fenders on my Salsa, but have no clearance issues. CX77 brakes and SKS fenders. Only issue I have is that the FD bumps the fender itself, easily remedied with a dremel...

I put a spacer on mine. Came with the planet bike fenders. Doesnt look amazing but works fine.

I think I got an extra spacer and screw at home I can send to you if you want.

Either works. With fat alloy stays (like VO) I've used a spacer, just found something in the box-o-random-parts that worked (a couple inner tube stem nuts might work?). For thin steel stays (like SKS) I've put a mild bend in them.

Surly Disc Trucker and Salsa Vaya with fender stays shaped to fit.

A spacer could have been used but might have caused interference issues with front panniers, but I'm speculating here, I haven't tried it.

Just dug up a picture of my commuter to see what I did. Looks like there were no issues using VO fenders and BB7 brakes. I had to use a rear rack specific for disc brake application though IIRC. (this was ~5 years ago that I put this thing together...back when I was the only one on the block with drop bars and discs!)

I bent them (but not that drastically) on my bike and it doesn't even have discs. I'd have no problem bending them like on those pictures.

This looks easy enough, maybe I'll try that. I had in mind something fancy like this.

Put these on the Salsa. Took all of 10 minutes. No fuss, no muss, and no bending:

Did you use a spacer, or did they go on as is? If they went on as-is, which calipers?

As is, over BB7s.

Got them at Mike's Bikes, btw, and they said if they didn't fit or work, I could bring them back, no problem. Worth a try. They work great for me. No rattles, no rubbing.

here is my spacer:

Looks fine, the skewer almost covers it. Works great I am glad they include it with the fenders. There is no way on this bike I could have done it by bending it, even with the spacer it almost touches the BB7.

That really doesn't look bad at all.
I may take you up on your offer if you have the spare bolt and spacer. :hello:
