Just stumbled across this Wilier Superleggera...it's a beauty!

Here's some info on Bike Rumor...

And here's Wilier's website...

i wonder if it is a tinted clear of chrome like the old versions.

if so, that paint might not be on those tubes for long.

looks awesome.

looks awesome. From the Bike Rumor article...
Dating back to the 1940's, we're told the finish process is more similar to chrome plating than paint.

interesting, paint in article different than web.

website has chrome lugs. probably tinted clear over chrome.

article has no chrome lugs, probably a paint finish, like those gold lambo's.

I saw that too. BTW, they have several (I think four) different finish options available.

Very nice. I like that finish and the chrome, and the flat fork crown is sweet.

The only downside is that the similarity to UT burnt orange is a little too close for comfort.

Well, that and that it's $3,000 for the frameset.

I think the term you are looking for is cromovelato.

It is a stunning finish.

I find it interesting how little they compromised on the vintage quality of the full-build bikes.

The Ritchey alloy seat post and Selle San Marco Rolls saddle are brave enough, but the Cinelli Giro D'Italia quill stem and bars are truly ballsy choices.

Frikkin' love it.

That is really sweet.

There was an old cromovelato Wilier in the same color at Cino this year...I was lusting over it. (Photo by djkashuba).

I saw it in Vegas and almost ordered one. I forget what the run is but pretty limited.

Great looking bike.

Interesting, I wonder where they come from (Asia?). I went to the factory one my Italy cycling trip -- seemed like all the carbon stuff was being shipped in and just assembled there...

Both the linked article and the Wilier website say "made in Italy"

$3,000 for the Ramato frame.

Wow.

Very pretty, but I'll stick with my Bianchi and my CSI.

(Insert grouch emoticon.)

Back in the day almost all the stuff was chromovelatto or whatever the spell is, but you can copper plate aswell tho.

Thanks -- I appreciate the marketing claim. They definitely aren't "making" them at their factory -- I got a tour from one of the managers and saw the whole operation. See, e.g. this thread from roadbike review http://forums.roadbikereview.com/general-cycling-discussion/wilier-tell-me-about-them-251880.html

That coppertone cromovelato was Wilier's signature color/finish. Not surprising that's their choice to bring back.

That may be. The wording on their website *is* a bit vague, but that's not uncommon for sites that are based in europe and translated to english.

The wording in the BikeRumor website is more definite, but then it is called "BikeRumor".

The shop I worked at over the summer is a Wilier dealer, next time I'm there maybe I'll ask if they know more. It certainly isn't outside of the realm of possibility that they've re-opened the doors on their lugged steel shop since you were there.

I'm sure there are small shops in Italy still producing frames in steel. There are about a bazillion artisan framebuilders in the USA. I'm sure there are a few on the Continent. It's quite possible that Wilier has lost that capability in-house, and needed to farm out the manufacture of these frames. It's quite likely though that they are "Made in Italy".

Other venerable Italian firms are back making retro steel frames. Bianchi has their Tipo Corsa, which is made in Asia, but they recently announced an Eroica bike which is made in Italy (perhaps by Bianchi themselves, who knows?). Stelbel (http://www.stelbel.it/en/) is another I'm aware of. Also, Pelizzoli (http://www.pelizzoliworld.com/) (Ciocc).

The neat thing about companies like Stelbel and Wilier is that they had distinctive offerings BITD, and it seems they haven't forgotten that. Other companies, not so much.

Edit: I had to "Americanize" the spelling of Ciocc. Really? The forum software can't produce page content in UTF-8? In 2015?

I wonder if Billato is still doing steel for other names ?

I hope my comment wasn't read as a criticism of the moderators. It seems to me that vBulletin should just read and write UTF-8 (or other user-specified encoding) out-of-the-box.

I wondered about that as well. Unfortunately, their website looks like a single-page placeholder, with no mention of what materials they build with.

I've worked with our hosting company to solve the problem, but they kept screwing things up and so I told them to stop. I need to get back to trying to figure this out myself.

that finish reminds me of the austro daimler finish of their vent noir. kind of a smoke silver finish but definitely not paint.

I saw one today. Absolutely beautiful.
That color finish has to be seen in person. Pictures do not do it justice.
