Hola, early Klein aficionados..

Long story short, I ended up coming into ownership of this here old Klein. I have no use for it, but it's roughly my size and I kinda dig the frame. MAybe you gents can help me figure out what it is? Which, in turn, might help me to figure out what to do with it.

I know nothing of it's history.

No model decals, and after a few days of casual searching online, I haven't come to a definitive ID. If the paint is original, I'm pretty sure it's Sovereign Blue. There's red showing through scratches and chips, but I don't know if that's primer, re-spray at the factory, or if it's been re-painted since. If so, they did a good job.. definitely wasn't a garage job.

Came with a chromed steel fork and mixed group of 7speed RSX STIs, 105 mechs and brakes, matching 105 hubset with a MA40 on the back and some Wolber on the front. The RSX would obviously fit as original if it's a '90+ frame, but I dont know about the 105. The fork has fender eyelets, which makes me suspect it's not original - just doesn't jive with the feel of the frame.

Could be a Quantum/Quantum pro?

Looks just like my '89 Quantum aside from the fork, it's 2 cm smaller, and mine is solid red.

The head tube gap between the top tupe and down tube looks to be at least 2cm smaller than my 55, so it looks like a 53 but it could be a 52.

Tis a 54 - which is actually quite a bit longer than I ride, so it might not even work for me.

I win !!!!

(apparently I spend too much time looking at bike frames)

What fork's on yours? Original, I'm assuming?

One of those bonded aluminum jobbies. Either a Sakae or SR, unpainted. My brother bought a Quantum a couple of years after I did. I think it was hanging around the LBS for a quite a while. It had a painted Sakae.

It looks like the bottle screws are painted, which suggests a repaint to me. I would guess the red color is original and the fork is not. I'd also guess it's an earlier Klein due to the cable routing on the TT. Dropouts might be an indicator of year. I'm too lazy to go check my '96. Catalogs are here, perhaps there are details that will help with ID:

the cage bolts are also painted red under the blue

They're all painted in the 1990 Klein catalog too - thanks for that link, that's the best resource I've found yet. Yea, this definitely appears to be a Quantum. I'll see if geo all matches up tonight

I can verify mine came with painted cage bolts.

Looks like an earlier Quantum. That pressed-in, square-taper bottom bracket makes it worthless for upgrading to a more modern crankset. I think it was '97 that Klein made the transition to threaded bottom bracket shells. -Jeff N.

Some cool info here, you might be able to figure out the year:

Yours looks a lot like this one, witht the external cabling, vertical dropouts, dt shifters, and press-fit bb:

I just learned the phrase "death fork"

nice!

Think I'll probably stick with the threadless conversion I've already done on 'er
