I have been spending some time on my commuter bike with flat pedals and wondered what non-clip shoes work well.

My converse are pretty well worn and I would like to replace them with a shoe that works well pedaling.

Does anyone ride flats?

there are several shoes made just for MTB with flat pedals, but IMO, for short distances any athletic shoe without padding (running shoes) are pretty good for riding flat pedals. running shoes tend to be horrible because of the bigger "stack height" and squish of the foam layer.

my go-to casual shoe is adidas sambas, and i find them great for riding my commuter with flat pedals. actually i consider adidas sambas the official dirtbag, drifter, adventurer shoe. mine have literally been all over the country and the world and done every activity imaginable, including top tier restaurants and long backwoods hikes. long live the samba!

Anything with flat bottoms and soft rubber soles works fine.

I have used Chuck Taylors, the addias above, Vans and currently using some Tiva's I got on sale.

Wearing these right now. Bike the younger kid to school on a bike with flat pedals.

On my townie commuter that I keep at the office for things like meetings and going to lunch or what ever I just wear what ever. They are flat pedals after all. If you mean for actual riding on flat pedals for miles then something like 5/10's would probably be nice and comfortable. I ride only flats on my MTB now and use 5/10's the grip is impressive and honestly it's almost like being clipped in.

Make sure your laces aren't too long. Laces in the chain ring suck.

Avoid soles with big lugs because they will limit your foot positions. Boat shoes like Sperry Topsiders or similar Timberland models work very well.

2nd'ed for Adidas Sambas. That's my go to bike commute shoe. I commute on flat pedal with them 3-5 days a week. And easy way to keep the laces out of the chainring is to just tuck them into your shoe.

Slip-on Vans - no laces to get caught, soft soles for extra traction. Plus I'm lazy and they just slip on.

unless you have some strange footwear, its probably the shoes you already have that you like to walk in

Five Ten Chicks dig'em when they see them on the dance floor. Work good on a bike as well.

Another samba vote here. Nice all around. After riding with cycling shoes so long, very soft soles can be a little annoying. Steel toe boots mimic good cycling shoe rigidity well, but of course they don't work well with straps!

Does anyone know if Five Ten shoes come in wide widths? A quick tour of their website makes me think they don't.

5.10s are not available in wide specific, they are not wide in the toe box, and not enough volume for high instep.

I use early model Altra running shoes to accommodate my wide forefoot/toes. Recent models have too much cushion, and the soles are too wide at the heel. The light cushion 1.5 on the right in image below is my favorite.

A flexible sole is not such a bad thing. Foot muscles can strengthen. My feet are much healthier after wearing flexible sole shoes on flat peddles for many thousands of miles.

The Tretorns Skymar are nice...no laces, has a stiff-ish sole and reflective patches on the back:

Might sound crazy, but right now 90%+ of my rides I'm wearing my Chaco sandals. They're pretty beefy--definitely more so than the classic Teva, and other than cycling shoes are the stiffest soles I've got. They're extremely comfortable--more so than cycling shoes.
