I need the collective wisdom of the paceline forum for a mega important decision..........
The wife has tasked me with buying a vacuum..
We have all hardwood and tile, no carpet. The main thing it needs to be good at is sucking up dirt/dust/crumbs along the edges of the baseboards/walls/stairs, as that is where most of the dirt collects. AND, cordless to make it easy to take around the house.

Top candidates so far are the Dyson V6 slim (300 Can $$) and the Hoover Linx (200 Can $$).

Recommendations?!!

Thx!!!

While I do trust Paceliners on important matters, when it comes to vacuums I went with Consumer Reports.
I ended up buying an Electrolux that was about 1/3 the price of a Dyson and I'm happy with it.

One tip. If you buy at Best Buy, where you get to see and handle the vacuum, they will price match Amazon (or most other US retailers.) I saved around $100 on the Electrolux, and a crazy $180 on a pair of Sennheiser Momentum headphones.

Just pop the listing up on your phone, they look, make sure it's in stock and shipped from Amazon (rather than a third party) and you've got your price reduction.

My SO just did the research and came away with a Kenmore canister model that works great and was a good bit less expensive than the specialist brands... We do have some rugs so some of her focus may have been skewed by that but less than 30% of the floor area...

SO My wife has OCD...... an I have had at one time up to three dysons at one time. Why you ask? well Ill tell you!
1St I was going through those Walmart hoovers and black and Decker about every year.
we had a hand me down Electrolux form the 80 it did okay. and I got a little money and bought a dyson the standard one"yelloe" it lasted about 4 years with one replacement hose money well worth it so that became the upstairs vacuum and then she got another one that last about 4 or 5 year and it just finally blew up. now i have the animal dyson and also the cordless one.

But supposedly if you have some real money a kirby is the way to go

Thanks guys. The prices on Amazon.ca seem to pretty much be the same as all the retailers here (Best buy, Costco, Sears, etc).

The two models I mentioned are both available from Costco, which makes them very tempting due to Costco's amazing return policy.

I cannot provide any feedback on the Hoover, but we have a Dyson V6.

It's a pretty great vacuum. The charging station is attached to the wall, and it's super easy to grab off the wall and clean up small messes. The extender wand pops off easily if you don't want to use the roller.

The suction is good on hard floors and thin carpet, but not so much for thick carpet. I guess this vacuum is not intended for cleaning your whole house, so keep that in mind.

several years ago when i moved to northern virginia i bought a hoover with many on board attachments. a heavy hepa filter vac. anyway out walking one day which was trash day and saw that one of my neighbors had put an oreck xl in their trash. don't know why but i took it home and found that they had clogged it with a pingpong ball in the main suction tube. unclogged and it is so easy to use on tile and hardwood floors. i actually have not used my hoover in the last five years. oreck xl no attachments but a very light easy to use vacuum. you can get one on ebay used for like $120 shipped.

Miele vacuums. We've had one for about 10 years. They are light, much quieter than a Dyson and they work really well on carpets and floors. Price is good too. Ours cost $400 Cdn.

Miele. Don't mess with anything else. Best vacuums hands down. Beautifully designed and packs away into a very small space. And super powerful. We've been using the older version of this machine (http://www.mieleusa.com/Product/Details/1012) for over 10 years with zero issues and it's just as powerful today as the day we bought it.

We've got a Dyson and generally I'm happy with it but we've gone through numerous hoses and now the wand thing has snapped, parts are available but they are expensive.

My sister has a Miele back in England. I used it when we visited and our rental car was filthy, since I'm OCD I cleaned it myself. Her Miele is incredibly powerful, almost pulled up the carpet. That rental car has never been so clean.

I have a Dyson DC07 bought at a Canada Costco in 2004 that's still great. I have replaced the brush bar twice as I've vacuumed concrete which wears down the bristles.

This vacuum has two filters, one before the motor and one after. Those filters need to be cleaned periodically. As long as that's done, this vacuum should last a long time.

My only other experience is with low-cost vacuums and none of them had the combination of durability and lots-o-suction that the Dyson offers, so I'd buy another.

Check on ebay for replacement parts, that's what I've been doing.

Miele for sure. Don't shop for cheapest or something Consumer Reports recommends. They will not last as long as Miele. That is my experience and the advise of one of the last father - son owned stores left in this area that sells all the major brands.

Most comprehensive vacuum review around. They also chose the Miele: http://thesweethome.com/reviews/best-home-vacuum-cleaner/

Miele. Not the cheapest but great value. Consistent, durable, parts available. Even the base models are nicely made and engineered.

I'm sure Miele is great, but as far as I can tell, they don't have a cordless model. That is a priority for us.

if cordless is a main buying point, then i think miele (my choice) and kirby are out.
dyson's are fine but ridiculously loud. even if quiet operation isn't on the top of your list, it's loud.

Get an Electrolux canister vacuum. It will last for decades, can be easily serviced unlike some upright vacuums, and is super powerful.

Got that ^ Shark on sale at target a couple weeks ago and it's great. Price was right, sucks nice and the wife loves it. That's a 10/10 in my book.

Roombas are cordless :P No first-hand experience to say if they're any good. I know a bunch of friends had them, but with limited success, usually confined to small areas. My dad bought one for my sis (I think because he wanted to see her cats ride them) but last I saw, its been collecting dust...

Our Miele canister broke after 10 years of good service. The quoted repair was $275, iirc, we picked up a nice Shark for around $125 from Target. We also have an Infinuvo cordless droid that works great. $100 from Amazon Warehouse deals.

My experience.....

We have big dogs that generate a ton of Hair. Long dog Hair is a killer on a vacuum.

After going through multiple vacs with burnt out motors, I bit the bullet and had central vac put into the house. Never had a problem since.

easier to use (especially with the hose stored in the pipes)
Stronger motor
Noise limited to the Garage
Empty right next to the trash can.
Extra hose in the garage makes it the perfect shop vac.

We have had 2 houses since then and pout it in each of them....would never have anything else.

YMMV

And a chocolate lab to make vacuuming something we c/should do multiple times every day. After doing all sorts of different options, we went with a Miele and have been very pleased with it. Works well, light, and built very well.
We would certainly endorse it for the hard surfaces.

My wife owns/operates a cleaning business in Philadelphia with several employees. They've cleaned about 30 units a week for 5 years. She would tell you, hands down, Miele. She would tell you Dyson and dirt devil are crappola.

Sure, point me to the cordless version!!!!! :)

I think with cordless anything you make allowances for some weakness or another. The Miele cord is LONG, and it retracts automatically with a push of a button.

My kid has a Shark and it works well also.

I have had 2 Dysons and never again..WAY too complicated, heavy, expensive and both had motors that failed. Went to a vacuum repair place, they said to throw them away..then bought the Miele. YMMV, I guess, like anything.

When it is apparent that someone else (or something else) is better suited to a task than I am then I delegate - in the case of hoovering I delegate to the Neato Robotics Botvac 85, which cheerfully vacuums my house every day whilst I am at work, providing entertainment (and no small amount of exercise) for the two cats.

+1 on Miele and their bikes were rather nice back in the day.

Actually I am pretty sure its a different company all together, but you can still pretend, I do.

A word on my Miele vac, recently I have started snapping off the plastic button that regulates the shaft length. Its happened twice. If it happens to you, stop and drop and immediately start scanning the area for a tiny little spring, the key component to making that button work. Other wise it is a whopping $10 replacement which no longer fits well due to a tiny plastic nub that should not be there, so the some of the old parts will have to be re-used.

Overall my shaft has become loose and wobbly after only about 1.5 years of use. Though in all honesty I missed the free first year tune up due to my Miele dealer closing up shop. So support your LVD so you can continue to buy those really nice Miele vac bags and the optional sandlewood scent to sprinkle inside. :p

Another vote for Miele.

The cannister model is built like a tank. Bags are on the expensive side.

We have had recurring issues with the cord retraction system. The reel and cord have been replaced once. It would seem to be a common issue based upon the volume or of repair advice online and I have since become an expert.

We bought a refurbished Dyson DC14 from woot in 2007 and it is still going strong.

We also have the smaller DC35 handheld that is great for hard floors.

I bought a brand new Dyson before the Botvac - it's total crap and lurks, in disgrace, in the garage.

oldguy00
10-23-2015, 11:46 AM
Is Miele a good brand?

lol

Seriously though, for us, cordless is a must this time around. If whatever we end up getting is terrible, then we'll start over. We already have a canister corded vac, forget the brand, but it works just fine. But I hate hauling it out and dragging it around. We have a house with lots of hardwood stairs, and kids that leave crumbs that seem to gather all along the edges of the floor/wall.
I want to be able to grab something off the wall and go around the house with it quickly, no cord, no canister to carry and set down, have it bang into everything when I get further than the hose can reach, etc.

Neil, aren't you English? I thought criticism of James Dyson or Richard Branson was a hanging offense.

Neil

I have a great deal of respect for James Dyson, but that doesn't blind me to the manifest faults of one of his products - Mr Branson on the other hand can do one.

Having a majority of our floors covered with carpet, we have a fleet of vacuums.
Dyson is most used followed by the Hoover.

Got a Shark a few months back. Awesome in my opinion. Replaced a brand new Bissell that sucked. Heavy, did not pick up well and left lint and dirt that stuck to the wheels all over my carpet. Never again.
